Largest casino in the world opens

The Venetian Macau is twice as big as the one in Las Vegas.

As of this week, gamblers and poker players have a new world-class destination.

The Venetian Macau officially opened on Tuesday and is claiming to be the world's largest casino and the second largest building overall.

The Venetian Macau is twice the size of the Las Vegas original and offers a mind-boggling 10.5 million square feet. Of that space 550,000 square feet will be dedicated to gaming with 3,400 slot machines (and the ability to expand to 6,000) and more than 800 gambling tables.

Completing the package are 3,000 rooms, a 15,000-seat sports arena, retail space for 350 stores, 1.2 million square feet of convention center space and a Cirque du Soleil-produced show. A series of NBA exhibition games will be played in the sports arena.

The only building in the world larger than the Venetian Macau is a Boeing Passenger Jet factory in Washington.

The Venetian Macau is a part of the Cotai Strip, which also officially opened this week and is already starting to rival its Las Vegas counterpart. Also of note on the strip are the Sands and the Wynn Macau.

The Macau Special Administrative Region, or as it's commonly known, Macau, is a unique area in China. Gambling has been legal and regulated since 1850. Its economy is based largely on tourism and much of that is geared toward gambling. Last year Macau brought in more money from gamblers than Las Vegas.

Also scheduled to open in the area are the Four Seasons (2008), MGM Grand Macau (2007), Grand Hyatt (2009), City of Dreams (2008) and many more.
