Hoyt has won both a WPT and a WSOP event and made numerous final tables in major tournaments. Born in rural Alabama, Hoyt grew up getting after school lessons in poker from his father, who taught him his "no fear" style of playing. As a teenager, Hoyt would sometimes get to play in the weekly cash game his father hosted and he credits much of his skill in reading players to the knowledge he gained from his father.
How many WSOP tournaments will you play in this year?
I'll try to play in something like two tournaments a week.
Are you a 100% poker professional?
Yes, I only play poker and have been for 27 years.
Do you play in both side games and tournaments?
I do play in both tournaments and cash games. I prefer No-Limit Texas Hold'em in both.
How has tournament play changed for you since you won your WPT tournament and became a well known face to the poker playing public?
I believe it has worked to my advantage because people tend to believe that I am always bluffing and will pay me off with more hands. Because of that, my strategy has to be based more on solid play and less bluffing.
You are currently playing in Event 27, the $5,000 Pot-limit Omaha with re-buys. How are you doing?
Well, I have bought in once after T.J. Cloutier busted me so I am in for $10,000. T.J. has been my nemesis for many years and we go way back. He is a great player and he was an even better player 10 years ago. Whenever we sit at the same table a war breaks out.
When the Series is over and you look back, what would you consider a failure and what would you consider a success?
First of all, I want to make money. But for it to be a truly successful Series, I need to win a bracelet or make it to the final table in the Main Event.
