Not all poker wins are epic because of the action at the table — sometimes it’s the circumstances around them that make them ones for the record books.
Something like that happened to Belarusian top-reg Aliaksandr Shylko: before he earned the biggest payout in the WPN and the Run Up Series title, he went through a situation so bizarre that fate simply had to reward him with victory. He shared his story on his personal Telegram blog — and we’ve translated it into English.

Aliaksandr Shylko’s Crazy Days Before Winning
The young Belarusian professional spent the first half of August 2026 at the Onyx High Roller Series in Cyprus, where he managed to advance to Day 2 of the $1,050 Run Up #1 MAIN $750K Gtd on the Winning Poker Network:
I finished my “work period” in Cyprus. I relaxed for a day in the sun, and then Sunday’s tournaments awaited me. At 5 AM, I managed to secure a second day in a 1k tournament and bagged 17bb. I wasn’t particularly happy about this, as the chances of making a profit in such a situation are usually slim, and we weren’t even in the money yet. The next day was a long flight, and I had five hours of sleep left. I woke up feeling a bit underwhelmed, boarded the plane, dozed off a bit, but made it safely to my destination. Upon arriving at the airport, I decided to immediately check when the second day of the tournament started. I texted my friend Renat, and he said, “The tournament starts in 8 minutes.
Alex was taken aback, but not at a loss — because he didn’t have much of a choice:
I already had my luggage handed in, and I hadn’t yet gone through passport control. I had to take my laptop out of my bag, share my phone’s internet connection, and start playing at passport control. After going through passport control, I quickly ran to get my luggage because my laptop had low battery, and the charger was in my suitcase. I grabbed my luggage and ran quickly to the nearest cafe to get a power outlet. Having successfully completed this part of my plan, I stayed at the airport to charge my laptop and wait for the moment when I either dropped out of the tournament or doubled up and my laptop would have at least 50% battery.
Somehow, Shylko not only managed to find a way to charge his laptop but also survive the ITM tournament bubble — and continued playing in a taxi:
It was pouring rain outside, so when I pulled up to my apartment, I realized I had no chance of making it there in that rain. So we decided to have dinner at a cafe, smoke hookah, and wait out the rain there.
Everything seemed to be going well — but after dinner, the room software began to glitch:
Every third hand, my table on screen would go black, and I couldn’t do anything about it. Luckily, my girlfriend had her MacBook with her. Meanwhile, I was struggling with a glitch, trying to make normal decisions in the tournament, and installing the client on a different computer.
Alex played until midnight in this state, when it was time for the cafe to close — and there were still 10 people left in the game:
I decided to run in the rain during my break to look for a rental apartment. But the task turned out to be difficult because I couldn’t find the entrance to the apartment building, and the rain was still pouring. So, I decided to go to the computer club, which is located in the same building, instead.
Only then did things finally improve. Shylko was finally able to settle into his new place. He reached the final table fairly quickly — and only then realized he’d have to actually play it the next day. After that, on his third try, he found the house where he’d rented an apartment and finally got to sleep. He devoted the next day to preparing for the final table.
Shylko’s New Best Cash as a Reward for Stress
At the final table, Shylko immediately chose his main enemy: ACR Poker ambassador Martin “Yenomez69” Zamani which Shylko knew enough about to characterize as:
An American player prone to reckless decisions and endless aggression. He also likes to smoke something before a poker tournament.
Zamani didn’t disappoint, proving extremely active in the first hour of play — so much so that Shylko was forced to go deep into defense, waiting for the best opportunity to extract value. This tactic paid off greatly — by the time Zamani was eliminated in sixth place with a $35,939 prize, Shylko had become the chip leader, which, coupled with a little luck, allowed him to cruise to victory.
The victory brought him a new best cash on the Winning Poker Network — $173,731.

It also raised his profit on the WPN to $225,404 as of August 19th, 2026.

After that he thanked his friends for this result:
The lineup [of the final table] was quite challenging, consisting almost entirely of regs — but I understood exactly how I needed to adapt to each of them. A big thank you to my friends: Zhenya, Vanya, and Renat, who helped me prepare better, analyze my opponents, and be ready for any scenario.
