Hellmuth biopic set to film in 2007
By Erin Warner
You can say this about Phil Hellmuth: he makes for good TV. In fact, Hollywood is banking on it by developing a movie about the so-called Poker Brat's life.
The film, tentatively titled "The Madison Kid," is scripted and scheduled to start filming in April 2007.
Los Angeles production company Beacon Pictures will create the movie, which will follow his early life in Madison, Wis., to his introduction to poker in university and his success as a professional player.
The estimated $6 to $8 million project is scheduled to be shot in Winnipeg, Man., Canada, but Phil Hellmuth is currently campaigning to have production take place in his home state. The script contains references to Hellmuth's former local hangouts and the town where his wife grew up.
Hellmuth is a 10-time World Series of Poker Champion but is also known for his bad manners at the poker table. It was this attitude that earned him the nickname "Poker Brat," which producers are considering as an possible alternate title for the upcoming movie.
Plans are also in the works for a new Game Show Network reality program called "Winner Takes All," which was created and will star Hellmuth.
