The Downside of Blogs

I'm hopping around Europe as I write this, an ocean away from the WSOP and Las Vegas.

It seems like the Main Event is also an ocean away, and I still don't know how this big break will go.

The final table is filled with poker pros, even if they are pros that most people haven't heard of. So is Las Vegas, for that matter.

The cash games I've learned poker in have always been filled with pros - the recognizable name who is underbankrolled or down on his luck; the crafty grinder who no one really knows yet who always seems to rack chips at the end of the night; the guy on a rush who rapidly jumps up in stakes; the businessman who regularly plays and doesn't need the money but always takes ours; and the fish who continually makes deposits in the poker economy by dumping large wads of money into pots for no good reason.

What you have always found in Las Vegas, L.A. or Atlantic City are the pros who go bust, get jobs, make it back to the table, then try again. This is the cycle we all know well, and now it includes the online world.

Liz Lieu at the rail
Lieu: Avid blog reader, but perplexed by personal attacks.

As I said in one of my posts during the WSOP, there now are simply more pros who play poker for their livelihood. That includes many of the men who will head back to the Rio for the final table in November.

I want to spend some time talking about blogs. I read blogs, big poker blogs like Pauly or IGGY, sites that started as blogs like Pokerati or Wicked Chops, and different blogs you probably have never heard of.

Some I read to follow the writer, others are funny, still others are places where I always seem to learn something. I've enjoyed writing my blog here at PokerListings, although I'm really not a good writer.

One of the things I like most about my blog here is the comments, reading what you think about what I say or do. I always hope this can be a conversation rather than me just giving some expert advice or something.

Playing poker, you have to have a pretty thick skin if you are going to survive, and I think I handle the pressures of the felt as good as anyone.

I'm not sure why it is, but personal attacks on this blog in the comments are different. I don't mind anyone disagreeing with me, giving me a better idea, or debating me. It's just the personal things that I think are inappropriate that I find quite annoying!

I know it comes with the territory of being well-known - I do understand that. I really love to share a bit of myself with you here, but it is something that takes time for me.

Lieu: Thankful for all the support and encouragement.

I know some of my favorite sites don't allow comments, like IGGY (congratulations, by the way, for cashing in the Main Event!). I like comments, so I hope things will get toned down in the future.

That's it, so hopefully it makes sense to you. I'll be heading back to Vietnam next week to prepare a prayer ceremony for the first anniversary of my father's death as well as to do my charity works there for a few weeks.

I'll be playing at Chilipoker.com while I'm in Europe and traveling, so feel free to stop by there as well as www.LizLieu.net.

Thanks for all of your support and encouragement.

Cheers!

I agree with your comments.....i like healthy debate on relevant subjects. - One questions is why people who are good at poker consider themselves to be good at the "business of poker" - Several players seem to be involved in various business ventures, you also it seems - BUT...poker players who understand the difference of a royal flush and a straight dont necessarily know the difference between SEM, SEO or PPC...... What do you think? -

    Liz,
    Always enjoy your written comments.
Unfortunately people can be very ugly at times...its the nature of the beast. You are doing a great job. Others could take lessons from you for the many wonderful things you do in your chartiy projects. Keep the faith and know you have many fans in the poker world of which we live.

    Go Girlfriend,

For what it's worth I tink you are the most generous, heart felt giving glamorous individual I have ever seen on TV and the internet.

Love the fact that you are now engaged and settling down whilst hoping around Europe (it's a awful place).

Can't wait for you to return to our Motherland and I also have to travel to WSOPE in London during Oct, so hope to come & say hi.

Forget all these bad comments from individuals as you open up yourself if you blog.

Look forward to the wedding invite!

you openly seek attention in the way that you flaunt yourself , so naturally comes with that negative comments, maybe even jealousy but you cant expect fawning coments all the time...... but the I Love Liz Lieu society seems to be alive and kicking...

    Liz,

Don't worry. As long as you're on the internet people will hide behind anonymous identities and make flaming comments. I can't even count how many times I've been called an idiot. I'm not saying those people are wrong but it hurts to hear it :-)

I started and re-started and then re-re-started this comment and came to the conclusion that I'm not even interested in commenting on the bad comments.

I just want to say that I love reading your blogs. They are always interesting and more importantly feel very real and personal. Exactly how a blog should be; one person's view of the world.

Here's looking forward to many more :)

    dear liz,
i started reading and i was really touched by your very emotional and heartwarming writing. as always with quite deep thoughts further on.

i have always enjoyed your writing and you really shouldnt underestimate yourself by saying you dont write very well. thats BS.
dear liz, i cant get enough of your blog!

i love your thoughts on poker, the reports on things going on in vegas, your life inside poker. needless to say that it is a very interesting mixture and i havent yet read a better blog on poker!

i also have to make you a compliment for those classy photos! they remind me of my favorite director Wong Kar Wai (In The Mood For Love) and his romantic movies. you are such a beauty!

may i ask you to write something about vietnam and the ceremony when you are finished with it? a sad thing we have in common - my mother died some 16 months ago - now it seams like ages ago and still makes me cry once again :(

best regards from european donk ;)

    Ms. Lieu,

May your father's memory always be a blessing in your life and in the world. I've lost both parents in the past two years, and know how difficult it can be to grieve loved ones. May he always inspire you to continue to be the best person you can be. You always display complete dignity and class in a world in which those qualities are often lacking. May it always be so. Have a safe journey.

Sorry that you are getting such bad comments. Here's a good one. You strike me as a down to earth, nice person from the things that I have read. Hope the bad comments don't get you too down. Have a great time in Europe.
