2008 Irish Open pot grows

Last year's Irish Open champ Marty Smyth.
Established all the way back in 1981, the annual Irish Poker Open in Dublin has a long and storied history.
And as Europe's longest running poker tournament, it's seen more than its fair share of great names stroll through the doors and take a seat at the tables - WSOP world champs Dan Harrington and Carlos Mortensen among them.
2007's tournament even, for a short time, became Europe's largest ever - a record breaking field of 708 players (including Mike Sexton, Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly, Antonio Esfandiari, Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, Andy Black, Padraig Parkinson, Ram Vaswani and Eddie Scharf) headed to Dublin to sample some of that storied past and unique atmosphere and compete for over €2.3 million in prize money.
So how do you build on that enduring legacy for 2008?
More big names and more big bucks, apparently: Irish Open sponsor paddypowerpoker.com has just announced a bigger buy-in (€4,200+€300), a million euro increase to the prize pool and an increased tournament capacity for next year's showdown, bringing the totals up to €3 million guaranteed and 1,000 players respectively.
And to accommodate the expected demand for tickets, the Irish Open in 2008 will for the first time be split into two Day 1s to allow for the growing field.
Why is this news today? Because online qualification opens up on paddypowerpoker.com this Monday, August 13, with a full schedule of daily feeders to regular bi-weekly grand final satellites.
Here's how you can win an $8,500 package to the Irish Open for as little as $4:
Every day you'll see a selection of stage one and stage two satellites on offer.
Stage two satellites start at $4+40¢ re-buys at 12:00 a.m. (GMT), with one seat for every $22 collected available to the daily 9 p.m. stage 1 satellite.
A $5+50¢ stage two freezeout also runs daily at 1:00 p.m. (GMT), with one seat for every $40 collected available to the daily 6 p.m. stage one satellite.
The 9 p.m. stage one satellite then is a $20+$2 with re-buys, with one seat in the bi-weekly super satellite for every $360 collected.
The 6 p.m. stage one satellite is a $36+$4 freezeout, also with one seat in the super satellite for every $360 collected.
The super satellites are $340+$20 and will run every second Sunday at 9 p.m. (GMT) from August 26 on, with one winning Irish Open package for every $8,500 in the prizepool.
Further details for the Irish Poker Open 2008 will be released in the coming weeks and players should check www.irishpokeropen.com for updates on qualification, venue, side events, betting, offline satellites and more.
In case you're wondering: Northern Ireland's Marty Smyth was last year's champ, taking home €650,000 after an epic heads-up battle with Roland De Wolfe.
