Seasoned poker pro Kyle Julius outlasted 667 entries in WSOP Event 4 $1,000 Top-Up Turbo to win $142,972 and the right to name his first child.

That second prize is not standard for World Series of Poker tournaments, by the way.

Julius’ fiancé is pregnant and they’re expecting in July.

“We’ve been arguing about names and my fiancé was like ‘Alright, how about this: if you go out and win a bracelet you can name the kid’”, Julius explained.

“We’ll still make the decision together but I think I have a little more say now. It’s pretty cool.”

Long-Time Coming for Julius

It may be Julius’ first WSOP gold bracelet but he’s no stranger to tournaments with over $3m in lifetime live tournaments since 2009.

Julius, who hails from Naperville, IL, is close friends with poker circuit superstars like Jason Mercier so it’s certainly some validation.

“It feels great because this is actually my first-ever live win and for it to be a bracelet is pretty cool,” he said.

“Obviously this is one of the smaller events of the summer but to win the second tournament of the summer… it feels pretty unbelievable.”

Julius was down to a few big blinds on Day 1 of the tournament and mounted an unlikely comeback.

“I’ve been playing for so long and I’ve seen so many people go from no-chips to winning tournaments that it’s just a matter of keeping things in perspective,” he said.

“When you get short everyone has that mindset where you want to chase and get back to where you were but that’s not where your head should be. Just pick the right spots and make the best decisions you can.”

Julius will have a very good shot at adding to his bracelet haul this summer as there are still more than 60 bracelets set to be awarded.
