Espen Uhlen Jørstad is a 34-year-old Norwegian poker professional who is residing in London. Due to the law in Norway in regards of online gambling for example, it is impossible for a poker professional to maintain. For that reason, he moved abroad to follow the thing he loves the most, poker.

Youth

Espen Uhlen Jorstad

Throughout his years as a youngster, Espen mainly was a fanatic gamer, spending 15 hours a day playing World of Warcraft. On a personal level, during this time, he was suffering from anxiety issues and shyness, which presumably came together with weight issues and a lack of purpose. Somewhat he would overcome throughout the years. At the age of 18, dropped out of school and he joined the Norwegian Army by signing up for the Airforce.

After being in the Army for only one year he returned, in his words, being a slob. He moved to a bigger city in Norway and started playing poker more often but was not taking it very seriously. He had no goals, ambitions, or any sense of values. He lived his life like he wanted, partying hard and playing a lot of videogames. He did continue hitting the gym regularly but was not heading the good direction in life.

Espen decided it could not continue like this, and mainly because of being forced by family, he went back to school again. After 5 years he managed to pass for his master’s degree in brewing science. This happened all after Black Friday. He kept on playing poker on the side throughout this period but managed to find a full-time job in a beer brewery as a process technician. Unfortunately, this did not work out for him and after one year he decided to hand in his resignation, based on having an urge of creating something for his own.

He made it all happen when he booked flight tickets to Budapest, aiming to open his own craft beer brewery project. Poker was at that time still a side income but purposed to fund his project. He also kicked off his Twitch stream and soon afterwards he signed a partnership with Unibet, back in 2017. As a result of this, he moved abroad to go live in Malta with only one main goal: Succeed in Poker.

Poker career

It is somewhat unclear when Espen really started playing poker, but for sure he started already very early, evolving to play professionally in and mostly cash games online. With his nicknames ‘’ Hymn2ninkasi’’ on Pokerstars, and COVFEFE-19 on GGpoker, he crushed all sorts of stakes. In December 2017 he became 8th during the Partypoker Norwegian Championships in Prague for a total of 20.000 Euro. Within this period, he became an ambassador for Unibet and moved to Malta. Espen is a communicative person at the tables, and therefor the Maltese poker community knows him well. Still mainly playing cash games and showing it to the world on Twitch and in his Vlogs, he went more and more abroad to play some live events.

Espen Uhlen Jorstad WSOP 2022 Main Event Winner

World Series of Poker

In 2021, during the Covid pandemic, the World Series Of Poker was organized online instead of in Las Vegas. With a buy-in of $5,300, Espen Uhlen Jorstad played himself to the final table, finishing sixth for a bit over $600.000. An incredible score which leads to his appearance at the World Series in 2022. He qualified himself online with ha $1,050 tournament for the Main Event and had also other tournaments on his schedule. Together with Patrick Leonard, he succeeded to win the Tag-Team event, which resulted in his first ever Bracelet and a shared prize of $150.000.

The Main Event started roughly two weeks later and surprisingly enough, Espen Uhlen Jorstad managed to become the first ever Norwegian who became World Champion of Poker. After 7 rough days, where he almost busted already on the first day, he was sitting heads-up against another poker professional, the Australian Adrian Attenborough. By winning the battle of his opponent, he not only became World Champion but also got an astronomic first prize of $10,000,000. Which directly boosted him to the number one spot of the all-time money list of Norway as well.
