Low Buy-in ($5 and Under)

As the cheapest way to get into the qualifying mix, you’re still two or three stages away from playing for a World Series of Poker package with these satellites. That being said though, it’s pretty easy to win a seat to the next level and if you get on any kind of heater, you could be in a direct WSOP qualifier quickly - and for virtually nothing.

They also come in both multi-table and sit-and-go formats, so you can pick your stronger game and give it your best shot. And at that price, you’ve got plenty of opportunities to keep trying.

Medium Buy-in ($5-$30)

For players with a limited bankroll but an aversion to super-low-stakes donkaments, stage two qualifiers are the way to go. Play is generally more predictable and at most you’re only one or two steps away from a chance to play for an all-inclusive WSOP package.

Plenty of seats for next level satellites are also readily handed out, and with still-affordable buy-ins you can reasonably take a few solid shots to get to the next stage. Stage two qualifiers also usually come in both multi-table and sit-and-go formats.

Moderate Buy-in ($30-$99)

Downside: Take a few bad beats in these tournaments and your bankroll – depending on your budget – can take a serious hit. Serious upside however: You’re never more than a few good flops away from playing for a once-in-a-lifetime prize package to the WSOP.

Competition can still be soft, but you will find a few grinders working their way to a cheap seat. One of the more famous rounders to get to the Main Event through a stage three satellite? The legendary Chris Moneymaker, who literally changed the face of poker when he turned a $39 satellite at PokerStars into a World Championship in 2003.

High Buy-in ($100+)

If you have the bankroll, direct entry satellites are the way to go. One tourney, one buy-in and at least one WSOP package on the table – often even more than one, depending on the amount of players.

Competition will be a mix of excellent, average and somewhat poor, with plenty of lower-level qualifiers having won their way up. Packages range from basic – a $10,000 Main Event seat plus $1,000 spending money – to Bodog-style, with full-on VIP treatment including a personal handler, a players’ lounge, massages, parties and a ton of swag.
