Grand slam for PokerStars
Some know him as Boom Boom while others have called him Baron von Slam but whatever you call him, Boris Becker is bringing his considerable poker talent to PokerStars.com.
After years of playing poker recreationally Becker is joining the PokerStars team with the intent of taking his game to the next level.
"When I was still playing professional tennis, I started learning to play poker casually in-between games because it helped me to improve my concentration," Becker said. "Now I want to develop my poker skills and challenge myself to become really competitive at the highest levels in poker."
Becker will have some good company as PokerStars is already home to some of the most elite poker talent in the world including Joe Hachem, Daniel Negreanu and fellow German Katja Thater.
It remains to be seen if a strong tennis game guarantees skill at the felt but Becker has already noted that the strategy, psychology and decision-making under pressure that he drew on in his tennis career could be parlayed into valuable assets in poker.
Becker has already gone through an intense poker training regimen that no doubt featured some of the great poker teachers like Barry Greenstein and the aforementioned Negreanu. Now the German is gunning for his first stop on the European Poker Tour. Becker is planning on playing at the EPT Dortmund in his native Germany and the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo next spring.
Becker is of course one of the greatest players in tennis history. He is a six-time Grand Slam singles champion, an Olympic gold medalist and the youngest-ever winner of the men's singles title at Wimbledon at the age of 17.
Will Becker be able to add a major poker tournament win to his resume? PokerListings.com will be covering both the EPT events so be sure to check out our live tournaments section to find out.
