48th cosponsor signs onto IGREA
Rep. Barney Frank's bill to legalize and regulate online gambling gained another cosponsor Thursday.
In a week that saw the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act take heavy fire from testimony to a House subcommittee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) has decided to cosponsor the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act, which would reverse the UIGEA and online gambling ban.
Nadler is serving his ninth term as a representative for New York, and he currently serves on the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
One of the main complaints about an Internet gambling ban has been that it infringes on people's right to choose to gamble online. This is an issue that Nadler could take up in committee since he serves on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee.
Nadler is also in prime position to bring up the debate of whether online gambling fosters links to terrorism and poses a threat to homeland security. The UIGEA was passed as part of the SAFE Port Act which deals with homeland security issues, and Nadler serves on the Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security subcommittee as well.
Nadler originally voted against the UIGEA when it was put up for vote in the House of Representatives in 2006. Now he joins the following representatives in support of the IGREA:
