WPT nixes seven tournaments for Season 7
The World Poker Tour is getting leaner and meaner according to its newly released Season 7 schedule.
The organizers of the popular televised series of poker tournaments are slimming their schedule by approximately one-third. Season 6 will see 20 events filmed (21 events total) while Season 7 will offer 14 events.
Seven tournaments will get the ax including:
- Mirage Poker Showdown, Las Vegas
- Mandalay Bay Poker Championship, Las Vegas
- WPT Ladies Night
- Turks and Caicos Poker Classic
- WPT Spanish Championship, Barcelona
- World Poker Open, Tunica
- World Poker Challenge, Reno
It's worth noting that the North American Poker Championship, held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, will be the only event filmed outside of the U.S. Ironically that event was once rumored to be cancelled as well due to stringent media regulations in Canada.
The Turks and Caicos did not make the guaranteed prize pool this year so there is no surprise that it is no more.
It's been a hard year for the WPT with the Travel Channel dropping the program and the emergence of the European Poker Tour. WPT founder and President and CEO Steve Lipscomb doesn't see the reduced schedule as a negative, however.
"To ensure the World Poker Tour continues to deliver the best experience possible Season 7 features a strong lineup of stops that have consistently proven to be player favorites and continue to see growth season after season," he said.
"Industry trends and player feedback were instrumental in creating the schedule, which focuses on marquee events to drive increased field sizes, richer prize pools and more media coverage for the players. The schedule also gives players more opportunity to participate in satellites and other events and allows the WPT and the casino partners to focus on bigger promotional opportunities."
The WPT has crowned 84 winners to date and continues to be one of the most prestigious series of poker events in the world. The Season 6 Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic saw 664 players register, one of the largest fields ever assembled for a WPT event.
