Roddick wins own charity tournament for WPT seat
By Sarah Polson
Not only was Andy Roddick's charity a big winner Friday night, so was he as he defeated the players in his Texas Hold'em charity tournament to win a seat in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Celebrity Invitational.
The inaugural fundraising event for the Andy Roddick Foundation, which benefits several groups that help abused and disadvantaged children, brought out a crowd large enough to pack the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
The star-studded crowd included tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, and Andre Agassi, as well as celebrities such as Nicky Hilton, Mandy Moore and others.
There were even a few poker pros who showed up to battle for the WPT seat including the current World Series of Poker (WSOP) Champion Jamie Gold.
The buy-in for the charity tournament was a relatively low $500 allowing plenty of average Joes to enter and play at the same tables as some of their favorite celebrities.
Participants were also treated to musical acts, a fundraiser auction, and an after-party as one-by-one they busted out of the WPT sponsored tournament.
All proceeds went to the Andy Roddick Foundation which in turn benefited organizations such as Kids in Distress, A Safe Haven for Newborns, Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Center of South Florida, and more.
