Fortune Wheel Spin to Win

Picture this: you’re on home soil, sitting by your computer and paying taxes. Outside the rain is pouring and you’re about to do grocery shopping for the entire month to come. Just when you’re about to leave your apartment and head to the supermarket, you get a notification on your phone. You look down and you see that your favorite poker player just reached the final table of a high roller live poker tournament. He’s at the other side of the globe sipping drinks on the beach and cracking aces.

This is the feeling we get when we’re watching the action from the WSOP Bahamas. It was December 3rd when GGPoker Ambassador and poker icon Daniel Negreanu voiced “shuffle up and deal!” and since then the cards have been flying at the Atlantis Paradise Island. Boy, do we wish we were there.

Poker players have now spent one week at the tropical paradise, and a lot has happened. Let’s take a look at what’s been happening at the WSOP Paradise so far!

A Fitting Start

There’s been a lot of familiar faces during the WSOP Paradise so far. All the famous poker players – Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Maria Ho, Jason Koon… – are there, as well as some well-recognized celebrities.

WSOP Paradise kicked off with the $1 500 Mystery Millions event. 3 446 entries were made distributed on five different start flights, which created a $5 169 000 prize pool. After the initial flights and a long day two, 34 players returned to day 3. One by one they fell and when it was time for the final table, Mario Ho went on a hot streak. In fact, she had busted all but one player when they were only three left and was the chip leader. A while into three-handed play, she eventually lost the majority of her tack to Jin Hoon Lee, who eventually became the tournament winner.

That’s a wrap for the Festival Bratislava! The Slovakian capital hosted the third the Festival event in 2023, and the hype was enormous from the get-go. Between November 26th-December 3rd, we’ve been treated with a lot of entertaining poker action, and thanks to live reporting and great live stream coverage, it’s been a breeze following along from all the action at Banco Casino from home.

The schedule was filled to the brim with exciting tournaments ranging from everything between Roulette to Mixed Games. With the Festival now being finished, let’s take a look at the more noteworthy happenings.

Gabriel Rymar Wins the Main Event!

Of course, a lot of the hype for the Festival Bratislava this year circulated around the €550 Main Event. A total 1 025 players threw their name into the competition, which created a €486 875 prize pool.

After several start flights and a long Day 2, it was eventually time for the final table on Sunday 3rd. There were a lot of nations represented amongst the final nine players, but when all was said and done, it was Poland’s Gabriel Rymar who claimed the title and the first prize of €80 000. Bring Out the H.O.R.S.E.S

The Festival founder, Martin “Franke” Von Zweigbergk, decided H.O.R.S.E not to be enough, so he added a second S at the end. The popular Mixed Games-format now had the addition of Sviten Special, and we knew from the get-go that the H.O.R.S.E.S-event would be a very exciting one to follow.

67 unique players decided to partake in this Mixed Games bonanza, which generated a €31 825 prize pool. Norwegian Jon Kyte can look back at 2023 as a great poker year, and with his win in the H.O.R.S.E.S-event, he adds yet another trophy to his already impressive resume.

The Festival Bratislava 2023: Jon Kyte won the €550 H.O.R.S.E.S Event.

Speaking of Sviten, this action-filled game deserved even more airtime, and it got its own exclusive event as well as being added to H.O.R.S.E. 75 players entered the live poker tournament and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that four Swedes finished in the top 10, considering Sviten (also referred to as “Drawmaha”) is a very popular game in Scandinavia. However, the title went to Austria’s Harald Redl who took home €3 817.

High Roller Action and Casino Tournaments

In terms of high roller action, two tournaments held the €1 100 Buy-In. The NLH tournament saw 51 players taking their lucky shot, all competing for the first place payout of €18 000. Yet another Austrian player would be crowned a champion, seeing as Ersin Sancak fought his way to victory.

The PLO high roller attracted 49 players, and it was Benedikt Hausmann eventually emerged a winner and can bring €17 800 back home to Germany.

What’s great about The Festival is that it does not solely focus on poker. Festival visitors wandered around Banco Casino and participated in the Blackjack tournament, Roulette tournament and Slots tournament. This truly makes the Festival unique, and Banco Casino is the perfect venue to these kind of things at. It feels like the casino tournaments are here to stay and will grow bigger and bigger every the Festival event to come.

As previously stated, Gabriel Rymar won the Main Event. However, it wasn’t his only tournament win in the Slovakian capital during the Festival Bratislava. He also won the €250 Bratislava Deepstack earlier during this week and took home €14 400. It’s safe to say that Rymar should be pleased with how the week turned out.

What’s to Come?

That’s a wrap for the Festival Bratislava 2023. A lot more could be said about the event, but in short, it was a massive success and players ought to be excited for the Festival 2024. Franke and the Festival staff decided not to keep players on edge and shared the Festival schedule for 2024.

The Festival 2024 Dates:

February 25th-March 3rd
May 31st-June 9th
September 9th-September 15th
November 18th-November 24th

The destinations are yet to be revealed, however, isn’t it fun to speculate? Earlier this year, The Festival Malta was a great success and it will be very exciting to see if the Portomaso Casino yet again will roll out the red carpet. We have also been hearing rumors about The Festival Albania, The Festival Croatia and The Festival Rozvadov, however, as previously stated, nothing is yet confirmed, and we will simply wait and see.

It’s been real, Bratislava, and great job to everyone who were a part of yet another excellent event.

For over two decades, the Aussie Millions held at Crown Melbourne Casino in Australia was one of the largest and most prestigious live poker events in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the tournament series has faced uncertainty in recent years due to regulatory issues affecting Crown Resorts, the casino operator.

In January 2023, Crown Resorts confirmed that the Aussie Millions had been “postponed for the time being.”

While the company acknowledged the tournament’s importance to poker history, it provided no clear timeline for its return. This followed months of silence about the Aussie Millions’ future after a Crown Poker representative stated on Facebook that poker tournaments would no longer be running at the casino, inclining players to seek action online at GameRules and the like instead.

The regulatory issues stem from a damning royal commission into Crown Melbourne’s affairs that found it unfit to hold its casino license. As a result, the Victorian state government enacted stricter gambling laws in August 2022.

New restrictions include loss limits and a ban on using cash at gaming tables, aimed at curbing problem gambling. These reforms were intended to force changes at Crown Resorts before it could regain its license to operate in Melbourne.

Analysts believe the new regulations make it very difficult to hold the Aussie Millions in its usual format. The tournament’s massive prize pools and ability to buy in using cash clashed with the new rules. While Crown Resorts said it would explore options to bring Aussie Millions back, restarting the event under the reformed regulatory environment was deemed unlikely for the foreseeable future.

Leaving a Deep Void in Poker Hearts

The Aussie Millions first ran in 1998 and grew to be one of the richest poker tournaments worldwide, with prize pools topping 20 million Australian dollars in some years. It attracted thousands of entries from professionals and recreational players globally. Notable past champions included Joe Hachem, Eli Elezra and Jason Koon.

The tournament’s disappearance leaves a void for Australia’s poker community and the international live poker circuit. Crown Resorts vowed to continue supporting poker but provided no concrete plans or timeline. Unless the regulatory situation changes, it seems the Aussie Millions will remain on indefinite hiatus.

For regulars and the poker community worldwide, the potential permanent closure of the Aussie Millions would be a major loss. The festival grew to become an iconic stop on the international poker calendar for many, along with the WSOP and WPT Series. The main event, with a buy-in of $10,600, will be truly missed by pros like former final table attendees Patrik Antonius, Fedor Holz, Bryn Kenney etc.

Uncertain Future Ahead

Some analysts believe the reforms make it impossible for Crown to comply with its existing business model centered around VIP high-roller customers. The loss limits and cash ban directly undermine the way many wealthy gamblers prefer to play. This raises questions about whether Crown can fundamentally change its operations enough to satisfy regulators, or if a new operator may need to step in to host the Aussie Millions going forward.

If unable to resume at Crown, it’s unclear if another casino property in Australia could or would want to take over hosting the event. The financial and logistical challenges would be immense. For the moment, poker fans can only hope the regulatory issues are resolved, new ownership makes the needed changes, and the Aussie Millions is given a chance to rebuild after the pandemic and continue its storied history. But the road ahead remains uncertain as the clock ticks towards 2024.

It’s safe to say that a lot of people around the globe finds the winter season to be a tad boring and dull. JackPoker is surely a place you’ll want to hang out in during December, considering they’re launching the Christmas Fair! The whole series holds a whopping $350 000 GTD and a total of 100 tournaments will be played (five tournaments per day, to be precise).

The Buy-Ins for the tournaments will range between $1-$10. Of course, it wouldn’t be a tournament series without a Main Event. JackPoker tends to always go the extra mile, which is why they’ve decided to finish the whole series off with two Main Events! The $5 Main Event holds a $5 000 GTD, and its “big brother”, the $20 Main Event, offers an astounding $20 000 GTD. The Christmas Fair starts today and we’re looking forward to three whole week of December poker fun!

Become a Winner Through the BombPot Quest Hunt!

JackPoker players ought to be thrilled about BombPots finally coming to the client! BombPots is perhaps the most exciting poker format on the live poker scene as of recent. Certain cash game tables will have the BombPot feature enabled. If you’re not familiar with the BombPot format: at random times, a bomb animation appears and the button is randomly chosen between the players. All players are then forced to pay a certain amount of Ante before receiving their hole cards. The board then simply runs out with no action and the one with the best hand takes the pot down.

The BombPots are not December exclusive; they’ve come to JackPoker to stay. You can play BombPots on NL- and PLO5-tables.

JackPoker truly brings the light to the online poker scene in December, and we’re so excited to follow along in the winter action. Good luck to all JackPoker players during December!

There’s no doubt about it: Banco Casino is well experienced when it comes to hosting live poker events. Earlier this year, they rolled out the red carpet for the Coolbet Open as well as the Winamax Poker Open. What’s more, they also hosted both the Swedish and the Polish National Championships. It’s a great venue and whatever live poker event they host, they seem to always deliver a poker experience in absolute top class.

They’re not slowing down either. Right at the end stretch of 2023, they’re in this very moment quite busy turning the Festival Series Bratislava into an unforgettable experience. The Festival is one of the most attractive live poker festivals in Europe and their stop in Bratislava is their third stop of the year, after they’ve visited both Nottingham and Malta earlier this year.

The Festival Bratislava kicked off November 26th, meaning we’ve already had roughly three days of interesting poker action to follow. Let’s take a look at what’s happened so far in the Slovakian capital, as well as what’s to expect for the rest of the week!

Is H.O.R.S.E.S Here to Stay?

When talking about the Festival, it’s hard not to think of the founding father, Martin Von Zweigbergk, more commonly known as “Franke”. This man can’t be described in one word, but it’s safe to say that he enjoys a lot of action. Maybe this is why he added a second “S” to H.O.R.S.E. Franke simply found the most diverse version of Mixed Games to be to boring, and he fixed this by adding Sviten Special (or “Drawmaha”) to the mix.

Thanks to the great live blog from The Festival with live reporter legend Jason Glatzer behind the wheels, we’re able to take part of everything that went down in the tournament. The H.O.R.S.E.S event kicked off with its first out of three flights the 26th, and out of the 60 entries, 28 went on to day 2. From the get-go, Norwegian Jon Kyte dominated day 2. When there were only three players left, Kyte held roughly 90 % of the chips. He dismissed Dimitris Giannakou and Robin Panholzer fairly quickly, which resulted him becoming the inaugural H.O.R.S.E.S champion and claiming the €8 825 prize check.

Jon Kyte continues his great 2023 poker year with a win in the H.O.R.S.E.S event. A couple of months ago, he won the PLO 4&5 WSOPC event in Tallinn. Photo: The Festival/Mario Toom/Dominik Demcak.

Who Will Become the Main Event Champion?

Of course, it wouldn’t be a great live poker festival without a Main Event. The €550 Main Event offers six different start flights before day two kicks off December 1st. So far, two flights have been played and we’re currently standing on 196 entries. Bo Alm and Daniel Nagy were the two who bagged most chips after the respective flight, and they will be very eager to return for day 2 in the hunt for eternal festival glory.

The Festival: More Than Just Poker!

One thing’s sure about the Festival: there are many ways to keep yourself entertained away from the poker tables. The event has some interesting elements in the schedule. November 28th, the Festival visitors went to another section of the casino to partake in the €125 Roulette Championship. This is a creative concept to say the least, and a total of 18 players joined the competition creating a €1 881 prize pool. When all was said and done, Domagoj Kuterovac could reach his hands into the skies and title himself a Roulette Championship winner. For his feat, he earned €941.

The non-poker related fun doesn’t stop there. The 29th it was time for the Blackjack championships, and this casino tournament attracted 24 players who were competing for a slice of the €2 508 prize pool. When the dust settled, it was Nicklas Dehli who emerged as the champion.

What’s That at the Horizon?

The Festival Bratislava will keep going until culminating with the Main Event final table December 3rd. There is a lot – a lot – of action remaining. Out of the remaining key events, the €125 Festival Queens will be very interesting event to follow. There is also be one more casino event to be played, seeing as there will be a Sportsbook Championship on December 2nd. The are roughly ten events being played each day; the players in Bratislava – as well as us following along from afar – has a lot of poker action to enjoy.

We’re so grateful for the great live coverage from Banco Casino. Thanks to this, we’re able to update you all on what’s going on in Bratislava, and the Festival Bratislava is surely an event you want to stay up to date with.

The snowflakes have started to fall down from the sky and a couple of houses might even have candlesticks in their windows. Christmas is approaching at rapid speed, as we slowly are getting closer and closer to 2024.

If there’s one conclusion we can draw from the year that soon is to be concluded, it’s that poker never sleeps. Whether it’s a great live poker event or online poker promotions, there has been something for all poker players to suck their teeth into during 2023. The best part is that the year is not quite over yet!

Considering the prizes can range from cash, poker bonuses, tournaments tickets and more – not mentioning the whole campaign will have over $100 000 worth of prizes – this is not a promotion you want to miss out on.

Everyone Loves Mystery Bounty

Last but not least, the twin sites are also expanding their Mystery Bounty supply from December 4th. From then on, Mystery Bounty MTT’s will be offered on the site. Not only are we being treated with one of the most interesting poker formats, but tournaments on the sites will also have boosted GTDs during the winter season. Be sure to collect many bounties: there are weekly leaderboards with special rewards for the top headhunters.

With temperature decreasing, there is no better time then now to enter the heat on TigerGaming and BetOnline. You can read more about all their December promotions on their respective sites during this week.

Good luck to all players in your December poker grinds!

We know it’s not a good idea to live in the past, however, we just can’t seem to let go of the Bounty Hunter Series that went down on GGPoker last month. Every day for four weeks, their tournament very filled to the brim with flawless bounty tournaments, and it’s safe to say we hadn’t seen such online poker action in a long time prior to the series.

“Flawless” being the key word when talking about GGPoker – everything they do, they seem to do with absolute perfection. Game of Gold is a perfect example of this. This YouTube series – which could be described as a combination of Poker After Dark and a drama series – has been praised since its release a couple of weeks ago, and it’s one of (if not the) best televised poker productions we’ve ever seen.

Their poker site is nothing less. Everything screams optimization and they have some unique features that really enhances your poker experience. Let’s take a look at exactly what makes GGPoker stand out on the online poker scene.

GGPoker – More Than a Online Poker Site

With so many different poker sites, it is important to go the extra mile and make players feel like they’re at home. GGPoker has really succeeded with this, and they’ve created a site that builds a community around the game that we all love.

Poker Craft

One of many appreciated features on GGPoker is their PokerCraft tool. With this, players can track their gameplay and achievements that motivates them to play their best poker. Through PokerCraft, you can also share your progress and achievements with the poker community. This creates a competitive and enjoyable atmosphere that’ll surely guarantee you to play you’re A-game.

SnapCam

Interacting with other players is a vital part in terms of making an online poker site’s environment feel relaxed and fun. GGPoker are well aware of this and has several features on their sites in order to make players able to express themselves around the tables. Through the SnapCam, you can express yourself through short video clips. This is a great way to express your joy after having a great bluff getting through, or maybe you’d rather send a little wink to your opponent when you suck out of them on the river?

GGPoker Unique Features

Voice Message

GGPoker are very innovative and always seeks to be in front when it comes to technology, and it’s an educated guess they’re always thinking over how they can bring even more features to their site. Through their Voice Message function, you can communicate with other players. This may sound basic, but it’s actually insane how much this enhances the playing experience and makes the atmosphere feel more authentic and “live poker-esque”.

Emojis

Of course, GGPoker also has a wide selection of Emojis, with which players quickly and easy can express their emotions around the tables, whether it being joy, sadness, compassion or any other feelings you might express when playing poker.

Prop Bet

Another fun little element is their Prop Bets. Through this feature, you can make bets with other players on the site. You can follow each other’s progress and see who’s edging in on the other. This really is a fun tool that you can use to create some friendly rivalry with fellow GGPlayers.

The list could be made long, but one’s thing for sure, GGPoker is a unique poker sites that strives to create a home for poker players. There’s no doubt about it: they have succeeded.

Ever since August 17th, the Vegas Series has been running on WPT Global. This was maybe the greatest promotion we’ve ever had at PokerListings, seeing as the winner would receive a $12 400 package for the WPT World Championship, which will be played 12th-20th of December. Every other Thursday, players aligned in the qualification tournaments hunting important leaderboard points. The ones who claimed the top placements on the leaderboard would secure their place for the Grande Finale on Sunday 26th, where they would battle it out for the top prize.

With the promotion now being concluded, let’s have a look at who became the lucky winner and gets to travel to Las Vegas for the prestigious WPT World Championship!

Koniferum’s Confetti – Next Stop, Las Vegas

All the 21 participators in Sunday’s Grande Finale had fought hard for their seat, and they were all guaranteed some sort of prize. However, only one lucky winner would receive the WPT World Championship package. Considering all of the qualification poker tournaments prior to the Grande Finale had a mere $20 Buy-In (albeit, there was opportunity for unlimited Re-Entries as well as one Add-On), it was quite the prize up for grabs for the eventual winner.

After the dust settled, player “Koniferum” emerged on top. We at PokerListings would like to give you our hugest congratulations, Koniferum! There’s no doubt about it: you’re about to be treated with the poker experience of a life time, and it will truly be a Las Vegas adventure that you’ll never ever forget.

As previously mentioned, the other Grande Finale players were not left empty handed. The rest of the final table players received $200 in tournaments ticket that can be used on WPT Global. The ones who finished on places 10th-18th received exclusive merchandise valued to $125, and the remaining three players got $50 in tournament tickets.

Las Vegas, We’re Ready for You!

With the WPT World Championship being a mere two weeks away, Koniferum would be very wise to start packing his bags. The WPT World Championship will be played at the Wynn Las Vegas, and it feels like it will be the perfect culmination of the 2023 poker year. Last year, the Main Event had a $15M GTD which was the largest guarantee in live poker tournament history. Global Poker also awarded them with the title “Best Poker Event of the Year”. We’ll surely be on the edge of our seats following all the action from the Wynn.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the PokerListings Vegas Series, and thanks to WPT Global for a great collaboration!

SwC Poker is among the first Bitcoin-based online poker clients in the world. Recently they have introduced the famous Sviten Special format on their cash game tables and came up with a great challenge for the mixed games poker fanatics out there. Sviten Special, also called ‘Drawmaha’, will have a special competition running every Tuesday evening for a duration of two hours. Not only are these cash games open within this timeframe, but they will also be offered 24/7 with various blind levels. PokerListings is looking forward to this challenge and we will keep you updated about this great initiative towards mixed games in the poker industry.

SwC Poker, previously known as SealWithClubs, offers players to deposit with various cryptocurrencies, whereas they previously only allowed Bitcoin. Now players have the opportunity to also deposit with Bitcoin Cash, Tether and Ethereum. Crypto poker has been a hot topic for a couple of years and now the offer of different poker formats has expanded with mixed games poker.

The Challenge for Sviten Special, one of the most popular mixed games in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, is being played out every single Tuesday at 20:00 CET. For the duration of two hours, the player who accumulates the most profit in big blinds wins a poker tournament ticket of $20 and specialized merchandise. A great initiative from SwC Poker and very interesting for crypto poker players.

  • Date: Every Tuesday
  • Time: 20.00 CET – 22:00 CET

Sviten Special – Drawmaha

If you are wondering how this mixed game is being played, we definitely would recommend you have a look at our designated pages. They help you to understand the game inside out and will give you a head start on your opponents. The basic rules of Sviten Special are fairly straightforward; The Blinds and button work the same as a standard Omaha or No-Limit Hold’em game, and every player gets dealt five cards. One-half of the pot goes to the best Draw Hand, and the other half goes to the best Omaha hand. This game is extremely popular among the aggressive poker players among us, who like to splash the pots and make tons of action.

Although the game is becoming more and more popular outside the northern part of Europe, SwC poker is introducing this great mixed games poker format to the whole wide world. Within no time, all the mixed games players out there will be hooked with this game.

Who Will Win the Gold?

Let’s shift focus to the series itself. Boy, have Game of Gold received a lot of positive feedback from the get go. Poker legends such as Phil Galfond, Patrick Leonard and Rob Yong have all praised the show, and the amount of views for each episode indicates that Game of Gold is one of the best poker entertainment productions through all time.

The series started with all players being divided into four teams consisting of for players. One member of each team then got to face off against each other in a Sit N’ Go tournament. We won’t spoil with team were eliminated after round one!

After the Sit N’ Go round, teams were redrawn and round 2 – Heads Up – commenced. This is where we are currently, and a new episode will be released today in which we will follow the progression of Round 2.

Spunky Hwang, the producer & director of Game of Gold, is very pleased with how the show turned out:

“The world of poker broadcasting needed a change, as the old formats used by most poker shows were simply overused. With Game of Gold, we’ve crafted a viewing experience that anyone with the slightest knowledge of poker will enjoy, with fascinating players that everyone can relate to and new gameplay concepts that will delight and thrill viewers in equal measure!”

With so many colorful characters – Daniel Negreanu, Daniel “Jungleman” Cates, Olga Iermolcheva, Maria Ho and more – Game of Gold really redefined the landscape of poker broadcasts. Hopefully there will be more seasons in the future. For now, we can enjoy season one, and it will be very interesting to see who finally will claim the $456 000 prize in the end!

Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary, Alberta plays host to two big WSOP-C festivals every year in January and May, with total prizes in the most recent series capping $5 million. The series is back in 2024 with the first series running from Jan 10 – 22.

It’s official – Calgary is the new home of WSOP Circuit (WSOP-C) events in Canada. The city is the home of Deerfoot Inn & Casino, a multi-use facility in the southeast portion of the city that includes casino, hotel, banquet, and convention facilities and will be bustling with activity starting Jan 10, 2024 when WSOP-C comes to town.

For a couple of weeks, two times a year, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) brings their regional tour, the WSOP Circuit (WSOP-C), to the southern Alberta casino and while the Calgary stops have only been on the schedule for two years, they are quickly becoming crowd favorites. The host facility generally takes over one of the hotel’s massive banquet spaces for the series, but even with the extra space, WSOP-C continually fills Deerfoot Casino to the rafters every time.

There have been four trips to Cowtown for WSOP-C since the live poker world reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic with the very first edition in Jan 2022 setting the stage for what was to come. That series crushed local records for attendance and prize pools with more than $3.3 million in total prizes and nearly $1.8 million in the Main Event pool alone, a clear record for the province of Alberta and establishing Deerfoot Casinos as one of Calgary’s best casino’s and poker destinations.

Since then, things have only gotten bigger. Despite some obvious growing pains during that first series, with lines for some events getting truly absurd, the facility has been able to beef up their presence for the huge poker tournament series, which continue to grow year to year.

The WSOP-C is back again for 2024 in the Stampede City with its usual two stops in Jan and May. The January dates are already on the books, with the series running from Jan 10 – 22, 2024. Interested players can use room code WSOP0124 when booking rooms for a reduced rate at Deerfoot Inn.

WSOP-C Calgary 2024

After two successful years in the city, the WSOP Circuit event is returning for two more stops in 2024. While the May details are still to be decided, the Deerfoot WSOP schedule for January 2023 is now out with 15 events over 13 days of poker action.

The games kick off for WSOP-C Calgary on Jan 10 with the ever-popular Big 30 Stack game for $400, as well as the first live satellite shot of the series.

The first big multi-day event kicks off on Jan 11, and it promises to be huge. In Jan 2023, the 4-Flight game drew more than 1,500 runners and packed both the Chrome Showroom and the banquet hall reserved for WSOP events.

Main Event action gets going on Jan 18 with the $1,700 ($1,515 + $185) game running three starting days before Day 2 plays out on Sunday Jan 21. Players who go deep in the Main should expect the final table to be played on Monday, Jan 22.

That Main Event final table will play out alongside Day 2 of the $2,200 High Roller game that begins the day before. And there is a lot more to choose from on the schedule with popular WSOP-C tournaments like the Black Chip Bounty, Mystery Bounty, and Monster Stack poker games with both two-card and four-card options to choose from.

Almost $15 Million in Circuit Fun in Calgary so Far

There have been a total of four WSOP Circuit series held in Calgary so far, beginning in Jan 2022 immediately after the pandemic. In fact, that original series was heavily impacted by pandemic restrictions still, with masking rules in effect and, at one point, a ban on all food and drink at the tables or in the poker area at all.

Even through all the difficulties presented by unprecedented crowds and external pressures, that first series was a resounding success, setting regional records for attendance and prize pools in the Alberta poker scene. In total, more than 6,500 entries were recorded for the 13-event series with total prizes of $3,324,335.

That set the stage for a solid return in May. While the numbers in May 2022 were down from the record-breaking January series, nearly 4,500 entries and more than $2.5 million in prizes was still a huge event by local standards with a Main Event prize pool of almost $1.4 million.

When the series returned to Canada’s gateway to the Rockies in Jan of 2023, the pattern of big January numbers and smaller May numbers started to present itself. The Jan 23 series blew past both the previous editions with nearly 7,500 entries and more than $5.3 million in total prizes, even after one of the 15 scheduled events had to be canceled due to the overwhelming numbers in other events.

The Main Event in Jan 23 set another huge record for the region, blowing past $2 million with almost 1,500 runners. The series also saw an early event, the classic 4-Flight game so popular at Circuit stops, draw a crowd of more than 1,500 entries for a prize pool of more than $500k in a $400 buy-in game.

The most recent series, in May of 2023, proved the trend of smaller turnouts in May compared to January. It was up over the previous May by nearly $1 million in prizes from almost 1,000 extra entries, but it was still well below the Jan 23 numbers. It’s worth mentioning, however, that May 23 beat the Jan 22 prize pool total by a hair despite seeing fewer entries.

Main Event Money Stays in Alberta

One of the more interesting trends to emerge in the four series held so far is that the winner of every Main Event to date has been a native of Alberta. In most series, there are cashing players from nearly every jurisdiction in Canada and a healthy dose of international players, so it’s not like this is just a local game.

Yet, four series in, the Main Event winners have all hailed from the host province of Alberta. Perhaps even more interestingly, and in a testament to how well spread out the Alberta poker talent is, all four have also hailed from smaller towns and cities in the province as opposed to the population powerhouses of Calgary and Edmonton.

It remains to be seen if that trend continues into 2024, but incoming players looking to unseat the locals from the Main Event title should be prepared for some solid homegrown talent standing in their way.

Deerfoot Inn & Casino – at the Intersection of Ecosystems

Deerfoot Inn & Casino

Calgary sits at the intersection of two very different ecosystems. To the east, the vast Canadian prairies stretch out for almost 2 million square kilometers. Prairie dwellers joke it’s so flat, when your dog runs away, you can watch them run for days.

But to the west, the terrain changes vastly as the foothills begin to rise into the Rocky Mountains. An hour’s drive puts you at the foot of the Rockies with world-class mountain destinations like Banff, Radium, and Jasper well within grasp.

Deerfoot Inn & Casino takes advantage of Calgary’s sweet spot as the gateway to the Rocky Mountains. The full-service hotel and casino offers rooms with 188 guest rooms featuring stunning views of the mountains or city, directly attached to a casino that offers nearly every form of gaming imaginable.

Whether you play high or low stakes, like the table games or the slots, Deerfoot Casino has plenty of choice. A 24-hour poker room caps off the casino experience with cash games running all the time, as well as regular tournaments even while there are no series in town.

When the WSOP comes to town, the poker room is always bursting at the seams, but it’s not with tournament action. The cash games are very hot and generally plays in the official poker room with tournament action taking place in the casino’s Chrome events room, as well as one of the hotel banquet spaces. During the WSOP-C events in Alberta, Deerfoot’s poker room sees some of Calgary’s best cash poker action.

Even since 2004, the European Poker Tour – maybe more commonly known as EPT – has been one of the biggest live poker tours. The circuit is since 2011 owned and presented by PokerStars, and the poker entity has improved the tour year after year, all for the sake of bringing the participant players astounding experiences and memories that they’ll never forget.

The 2023 season has thus far not been disappointing. The tour has made stops in Paris, Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Cyprus, and many lucky winners have had the privilege to lift a prestigious EPT trophy. The best part is that it’s not over: the last EPT event of the year will be played in Prague, December 6th-17th.

PokerStars decided not to keep the poker community on edge, and a couple of days ago, they released the full EPT schedule for 2024. Buckle up, poker players: we’re in for a ride!

EPT Schedule 2024

In a scientific-like manor, PokerStars have decided to kick off the EPT 2024 circuit with a “big bang”. In 2023, the EPT made its debut stop at Paris. Not only did it keep up with the expected EPT standard that we’ve grown accustomed with, but PokerStars saw great potential in the French capital becoming a giant actor on the EPT scene. Associate director of live event operations at PokerStars, Cedric Billot, can’t wait for the EPT to kick off the year in Paris:

“After last year’s EPT Paris, we really listened to players’ feedback, and we looked at how to improve the players experience and capacity for this event which has the potential to be one of the largest EPT festivals ever. A new and larger venue, improvements on the registrations, more tables… we hope to welcome as many players as possible in 2024 in Paris!”

The one who wants to secure his or hers participation in EPT Paris already, can head over to PokerStars and participate in either the online satellites or the “Power Path”. Packages including the Buy-In for the €5 300 Main Event and hotel accommodations are waiting for you to get your hands on them!

After Paris, the EPT will take over the Monte Carlo Casino in April. After that, it is time for a legendary event, seeing as the EPT will visit poker players’ favorite location – Barcelona! Ever since the tour’s birth in 2004, it’s been visiting Spain and its capital. It’s been an ongoing success that just has kept improving, and PokerStars will eventually release more details about the celebratory event.

Not only was it Paris that got the honor to welcome the EPT for the first time in 2023. Cyprus also rolled out the red carpet, and they will follow up their debut in 2024. The tables will be arranged neatly at the Merit Royal Diamond Hotel & Casino & Spa in October.

Last but not least, the 2024 EPT season will end in Prague, just at it will do in 2023.

Banco Casino: Hospitality Package
Hospitality Package

Everything that comes with live poker is very demanding and straightforward. To give a couple of examples such as; travelling, spending a lot of time in the casino, not eating properly, long days, short sleeps. Take in mind that such a poker week can have a big impact on the physical and mental health.

With this being said, we strongly believe that the hospitality package of The Festival Series is something extremely valuable for poker players, especially the ones who are travelling alone or with a friend. There are plenty of sports activities scheduled and dinners to be attended, there is no better method to meet other fanatic poker players than here.

Banco Casino is known for its excellent service towards poker players, and for showing relentless effort to make every live poker festival a great place to be.
