Titan Poker crowns top Canadian player
By Sarah Polson
Poker players in Halifax, Nova Scotia, may want to be a little more wary when playing against James Galvin. He was named the Top Canadian Poker Player at Titan Poker after winning a tournament staged by the poker site.
James Galvin, 23, has been playing at Titan Poker for more than a year and bested 28 other leading Canadian poker players in the Jan. 13 tournament. Not only did he claim the $500 top prize, he gets to wear the crown of Top Canadian Player.
The tournament came at the end of a six-month promotional schedule for players to get in on the competition. Now Galvin will have to defend his title as Titan Poker stages additional tournaments specifically targeting poker players in Canada.
That's a tall order to fill for a young player who currently only plays poker as a hobby. When he does play, Galvin told Titan Poker he likes cash games and tournaments equally.
Perhaps his tournament win, and the need to defend his title, will push Galvin more toward tournament play now.
"Titan Poker is a great site with a lot of great guaranteed tournaments," Galvin said after his Top Canadian Titan tournament win.
Titan Poker announced at the beginning of the year that its guaranteed tournament had reached more than $10 million in total payouts monthly now. In March, that number will go even higher as the poker site hosts a $2 million guaranteed prize tournament on March 2.
Another recent recipient of Titan Poker's generosity was Sorrel Mizzi. He was one of the 20 players who qualified for the Tournament Titan, and then he went on to win the tournament for a $200,000 top prize out of a $1 million guarantee.
Part of Mizzi's prize was a $12,000 prize package to the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event.
Titan Poker also hosted the 2007 European Championship of Online Poker in December, which awarded more than $2.5 million in guaranteed prizes during 10 days of poker tournaments.
