The Grand to hit theaters in March

The latest poker-based movie to head to the big screen will be The Grand, written and directed by Zak Penn. The movie will be released to theaters in March.

Zak Penn is better-known for writing action hero movies such as Last Action Hero, Behind Enemy Lines and X-Men: The Last Stand. He takes on a different genre with The Grand, creating a poker mockumentary.

The movie is intended to be a comedic fake documentary about a poker tournament, which Penn also left mostly unscripted so that the actors would have to come up with their own lines and actions based on their characters.

Penn directed from a screenplay outline but let the actors improvise their own lines as they played poker in a fake international tournament called the Grand Championship of Poker.

The cast is made up of a long list of stars such as Ray Romano, Jason Alexander, David Cross, Shannon Elizabeth, Dennis Farina, Woody Harrelson, Cheryl Hines, Richard Kind and more. Some pros turned up to play as well, including Doyle Brunson, Phil Laak, Phil Gordon, Phil Hellmuth and more.

The film made its initial debut at film festivals in 2007, including one in Las Vegas in June. Now it is slated to head to theaters March 21.
