Olympian Michael Phelps Plays First $10,000 Poker Tournament (Photos)
Michael Phelps is the most successful athlete in the history of the Olympics. Now he's trying to add a major poker title to his list of accomplishments.
PokerListings spotted Phelps today at the $10,000 buy-in PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event, testing his poker skills against some of the best players in the world.
Since announcing his retirement from competitive swimming following the 2012 Summer Games, Phelps has been seen playing cards in both Las Vegas and London, including the reported $100,000 score he made in a high-stakes Sin City cash game.
But so far tournament success has eluded the 18-time gold medalist. With just one small cash on his tournament résumé Phelps is looking to make a big splash ihere and so far he's off to a good start.
Phelps managed to make it through Day 1 with 92,000, thanks in part to a big pot won against young gun Dylan Hortin. Flopping a set of fours, Phelps got paid off by Hortin who held pocket kings.
Phelps was able to hold his own at a tough table that also included Melanie Weisner and was frequently visited by top-flight poker pros like Antonio Esfandiari and Matt Wakeman.
It's still early but PokerListings.com will be keeping an eye on Phelps' progress until he either busts or wins it all. Keep scrolling for all the photos of Phelps on the felt.
