Elton Tsang Wins One Drop Monaco for €11.1m; Salomon 3rd
Canadian-born, Hong Kong-based Elton Tsang is now 21st on poker's all-time tournament earnings list and all he had to do was win one small, 3-day event over the weekend.
Seeing that he began the week outside of the top 3,000 on that list, you can guess it wasn't exactly an ordinary poker tournament.
Tsang won the first-ever Big One for One Drop Invitational in Monte Carlo, organized by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté, over 26 fellow invitees who each paid €1m to buy in (two paid twice, even).
It was the highest tourney buy-in ever and the result was a €24,888,892 prize pool, €3m of which was donated to the Laliberté's One Drop Foundation which helps bring clean water to communities in need.
That left a €11,111,111 first-place prize for Tsang, who defeated Russian Anatoly Gurtovoy heads-up. Gurtovoy collected €5,427,781.
Salomon, Voulgaris, Pantling Make Final Table
The starting 26 played down to just eight on Saturday with the chip leader coming into the final table another Canadian in Matchbook CEO Andrew "clockwyze" Pantling.
The former runner-up at the EPT Grand Final looked to be a sure bet to take one of the top prizes but ultimately fell in sixth - the first spot in the money.
He earned €5,427,781. Also making the final was famed sports bettor and Monaco resident Haralobos Voulgaris, who finished eighth but just outside of the money.
Big One for One Drop vet and One Night in Paris celeb Rick Salomon had a nice run, making it all the way to third to earn €3,000,000. Former WSOPE Main Event champ James Bord was fourth for €2,100,000.
A few final-table participants added some James Bond-esque flair to the final table as they arrived to the table in tuxedos.
