Google Added Preferred Sources: Here’s How to Add PokerListings as a Preferred Source

If your Google results have felt a bit… shuffled recently, don’t worry. It’s not all in your head. Google recently introduced a new setting called Preferred Sources that lets you tell Search which outlets you want to see more of in the Top stories news box.

It won’t block other publishers, but when your chosen outlet does cover something, Google will try to place it on top, sometimes in a dedicated From your sources section.

At this point, you’re probably wondering why a poker news site is telling you about changes in Google’s search algorithm. Fair point.

In this article, along with explaining this algorithm shift, we’re also going to show you how to make PokerListings your preferred news source for all things poker (and beyond).

What “Preferred Sources” Actually Does

First thing’s first, let’s tackle what this Preferred Sources change actually does. Basically, it’s Google’s way of letting you tune your news feed inside Search itself.

You pick the outlets you trust; and then Google prioritizes them when they’ve published fresh (and relevant) pieces on what you’re searching for.

This all shipped after a short testing period over the summer, when Google trialed the idea and the little star icon you’ll now see next to Top stories. For now, the feature is occupying the Top stories module and can create a From your sources block lower on the page.

With that said, and since this is only a soft launch, the Preferred Sources option is currently rolling out in the U.S. and India in English, with broader availability expected.

A Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make PokerListings a Preferred Source

There are two ways of going about this: from a search results page (the fast way), or via Google’s settings page (the clean way). Don’t worry, we’ll show you both and then you can pick what you like better.

Option A: Add It From a Search Page (The Quick Way)

  1. Search for a topic in Google. Let’s stay on theme, so search some poker related news (e.g., “poker schedule,” “WSOP Paradise”). If the news is trending, the Top Stories box should appear.
  2. Click the starred cards icon next to the Top stories label (the one that looks like two overlapping cards with a star)
  3. Search for PokerListings in there. In the “Choose your preferred sources” pop-up, type PokerListings (or paste the site URL) and then tick the box.
  4. Now hit Reload results so your check if your preferences apply immediately.
  5. That’s all there was to it. From now on, when PokerListings covers a topic, you should see it more often in either your Top stories or in From your sources.

Option B: Add It in Google Settings (The Tidy Way)

  1. Open Google’s Preferred Sources settings page.
  2. Now search for PokerListings either by name or our URL and check the box.

Again, all there is to it. These preferences are going to apply anywhere you’re signed into your Google account.

Good to Know

While we’d obviously prefer you come to us for poker news, you can actually add multiple outlets (handy if you follow several poker and general-news sites) from Preferred Sources. You can also remove them any time.

And keep in mind that your list doesn’t exclude other reporting. it just tells Google whose coverage you’d rather see when it matches your query.

What If You Don’t See the Star?

You can’t see the Top stories box in your search? There could be a couple of reasons

  1. It could be as simple as some queries just don’t trigger news modules. Try a more time-sensitive search (e.g., “EPT Barcelona Day 3 chip counts”).
  2. Then again, maybe your region’s not supported yet. Remember when we said Preferred Sources is live in English in the U.S. and India. If you’re elsewhere, you may not see it yet.
  3. Maybe you’ve signed out of your Google account. Preferences sync when you’re signed into your Google account; otherwise they may not stick across devices.

Why This Matters for Poker Readers

Just like any news type, poker news moves fast: circuit stops, schedule tweaks, qualifier routes, payout ladders. It all changes day to day.So, Preferred Sources is there to help you bias Search toward the publishers you already rely on.

If PokerListings has a fresh schedule table on the topic you search, Google floats it higher in the news box so you get to the useful details faster.
