Marty Smyth wins Poker Million VII

By: Sarah Polson

The third time was the charm for Marty Smyth at the Ladbroker Poker Million VII. The poker pro pulled down a $1 million win during the final last week.

Smyth has landed at the Poker Million VII final table three times in a row now, and this time he finally picked up the win.

Last year he came in in second place for a $500,000 cash, and the previous year he collected $100,000 for sixth place.

Each time he's waged an arduous battle to get through the early rounds of the competition and the semifinals and make the final table. This year he nearly missed out on the win again when he was down to just one set of blinds three hands into the final table.

Smyth had his A-K beaten by a pair of kings to nearly knock him out.

He made an impressive comeback at the final table that also included leading Irish players such as Eoghan O'Dea, World Series of Poker bracelet holder Ciaran O'Leary and Liam "The Gentleman" Flood.

The other two players at the final table were Kevin Allen, a 29-year-old from Romford, and Svein Petter Neilsen, a Norwegian. The two players freerolled their way into the semifinal round after winning seats via Ladbrokes Poker.

"This was a thrilling format which promised lots of excitement," said Edward Ihre, Ladbrokes Poker managing director. "For the first time, Ladbrokes Poker gave players who were runners-up in their heat a second chance to get to the semi-finals as well as running two online super satellites to play in the two semi-finals."

Neilsen turned his free seat in the event into a sixth-place finish and a $75,000 win, while Allen finished fifth for $100,000. In the end it came down to O'Dea versus Smyth in heads-up play to determine the winner.

"Marty Smyth seemed destined to win this tournament having made the last two final tables," Ehre said.

The final-table results were:

Place Name Prize
1st Marty Smyth $1 million
2nd Eoghan O'Dea $260,000
3rd Ciaran O'Leary $175,000
4th Liam Flood $130,000
5th Kevin Allen $100,000
6th Svein Petter Neilsen $75,000

Some of the big names that didn't make it past the semifinal round to join the final table were Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, Tony G, Roy Brindley, Jonas Danielsson, Barney Boatman and his brother Ross Boatman.
