Doyle Brunson Plays His First-Ever EPT
It’s hard to believe there are any firsts left in the poker world for Doyle Brunson but he’s found one by playing his first ever European Poker Tour event here at EPT London.
With ten WSOP bracelets, a WPT title and over $6 million in career earnings Brunson truly is the Godfather of poker. But in recent years he's curtailed his travel and participation in live tournaments in favor of the Big Game in Las Vegas.
That’s why it was so surprising when Brunson’s name was included on the American team roster for the upcoming Caesars Cup at WSOP Europe in Cannes.
“I was on my way to Cannes and an old friend I’ve known for 30 years invited me to play with him for a few days here in London,” Brunson said, sitting at his tournament table on a break from today’s action.
“So I’ll be playing down at the Western Club if I get knocked out of this, before I head down to Cannes,” he added.
Brunson has spent time playing poker in Europe before, including the previous WSOPEs which before this year were held here in London, which makes it even more surprising that this is his first time participating in an EPT event.
“I certainly wasn’t ducking the EPT or anything,” Brunson said with a smile.
With both WPT and WSOP titles already under his belt, Brunson is one of the few players eligible for poker’s Triple Crown at this EPT main event.
At 78 years old Brunson might be slowing down but he’s far from done.
“As long as I can travel and play poker, I want to do it,” he said.
“I feel good except for my leg but there’s not much I can do about that.”
