Phenom Poker Speeds Up Return Timeline After $94K Hack

Earlier this week, Phenom Poker fell victim to a targeted hack that saw $94,267 (in USDC) stolen from its token liquidity pool and ultimately forced the site to go offline while its team got everything under control. Here’s the play-by-play of what happened on Monday and when players can expect Phenom to be up and running.

How a Hack Happened on Phenom Poker

While players who tried accessing the site on Monday were met with “the site is under maintenance,” message, CEO of Phenom Poker Matt Valeo came out with an official statement on Discord via Michael Dunlop:

Today we got attacked by a sophisticated group who was able to compromise a team members machine. Unfortunately, a private key was compromised and the hacker was able to move some site funds before we were able to act. PLAYER FUNDS ARE SAFE.

Valeo went on to explain that $94,267 in USDC were taken from its token liquidity pool and doubled down on the fact that no player funds were affected in this hack, as these are not directly available to Phenom and by proxy to the hackers. In the same Discord group, Valeo added:

Although this event is frustrating… I’m personally glad to see the system working – players were able to control and withdraw their funds even while our app was offline

Since the initial hack on Monday, Phenom has been working around the clock to restore the liquidity pool.

What Are the Next Steps for Phenom?

As of right now, Phenom is still down for the count. In their initial statement, the team behind Phenom Poker said it will be double checking contracts, endpoints and wallets to make sure everything is good to go and most importantly safe once the system has been rebooted.

While the original timeline planned that Phenom Poker go back online again at 10am ET on April 4, the most recent update on Discord announced it was ready to speed things up. According to this, the security check is completed and the site is back on track to go live in just a few hours, at 10 AM (EST), April 2.

During its security sweep, Phenom was able to pinpoint the exact source of the hack and take additional precautionary measures were beyond what they originally planned when going offline.
