Alex Brenes
Alex Brenes' family seems to have a strong poker gene; when he made a WPT final table, he was following in the footsteps of his brothers Eric and Humberto. Alex also triumphed at the L.A. Poker Classic in February, 2005, where he won both $100,000 and a $25,000 buy-in to the WPT World Championship at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Alex was a participant in a recent PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, where teams from several different nations played. An observer says that whenever two players went all-in, their respective teams would hasten tableside and cheer their man on. Alex Brenes was especially vocal; when a Costa Rican player was drawing, he'd begin a chant of the cards the player needed: "Nine! Eight! Heart!" It got to the point where a South African player, half in jest, asked the Costa Ricans to quit putting voodoo on the flop. The Costa Ricans won the tournament.
