It was in the early 1990's that Joe 'Elegance' Beevers took up poker. He was quite methodical in his study of the game, carefully observing those players who seemed to always be making money, analyzing how they scored their successes. Apparently, his approach to learning worked; Joe Beevers is currently on a poker tour with 'the Hendon Mob,' which will run until the end of 2005. The Mob is being sponsored by online poker room Prima Poker.
You just busted out of the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament. What happened?
With the blinds at $75-$150, I was in the blind holding the 7-7-4-4. Erick Lindgren raised to $500 in early position, Mike Sexton called, and a player who I thought was a bit on tilt also called. I decided to call as well and I had about $10,000 at the start of the hand. The flop came 8-8-4 and I checked. Erick bet $1,000, Sexton folded, the other player raised the pot and I re-raised all-in expecting Erick to fold. But as it happened, Erick held the 8-7-6-4 and had flopped the nuts. His hand held up and he knocked out two players in the process. There are situations where I might get away from the hand but this wasn't one of them.
How has your game changed since the tournaments became so big?
There are situations today in which I gamble more in big pots. You have to do this in order to amass chips.
How do you feel about the level of difficulty of winning in a 2005 WSOP event?
It is very tough to succeed in these huge starting fields. I don't care what anybody says but in my opinion any individual player has odds to come out a loser after the Series. But, then again, if you succeed once you are going to be well rewarded, that's all it takes. Even if you only make it to the final table in the Main Event you are going to win something like $1,000,000 and that's for finishing in the top 9!
When you play in side games which game do you prefer?
Pot-Limit Omaha is my bread and butter in the cash games, I consider it my strongest game. I am not as strong in Limit and Stud games.
What does the future look like for Joe Beevers the poker player?
Aside from getting married after the WSOP, the biggest thing on the horizon is the Monte Carlo Million. This is a $25,000 buy-in event with 120 players and it is sponsored by Prima Poker. I am very much looking forward to playing in that one.
