
The Poker Hall of Fame was started in 1979 by Benny Binion, owner of the Horseshoe Casino, in Las Vegas to preserve the names and legacies of the world's greatest poker players.
Currently, membership in the Poker Hall of Fame is administered directly by the WSOP. As of this year, over 50 people have been inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, with over 30 still alive.

Since 2009, the Poker Hall of Fame has been accepting nominations from the public. The election itself is made by all members of the Poker Hall of Fame, as well as a select group of media representatives. This step was intended to increase interest in the Hall of Fame.
