Player on partypoker wins $1,000,000 in single SPINS tournament

The player "AfterH0urs" has hit the jackpot on partypoker in a single tournament and won it with just a few hands. He has become a millionaire in a single game after winning the $1,000,000 jackpot with a $100 buy-in in a partypoker SPINS tournament.

"AfterH0urs" had bought into the tournament along with players "patotecomoherma" and "YIYOO". In the heads-up of the ultra-turbo tournament, "AfterH0urs" and "patotecomoherma" were playing each other. Both chip stacks were tied with 5.5 big blinds each going into the deciding hand. "Patotecomoherma" went all in from the button with K4o and "AfterH0urs" called with A6o. The flop brought A95, giving "AfterH0urs" top pair. The turn brought a 4, which gave "Patotecomoherma" a pair and he went into the river with five outs.

The river brought a 6 and "AfterH0urs" had two pairs. His victory was sealed and his bankroll grew by a seven-figure sum.

"I couldn't believe my eyes"

The crazy thing is that the player didn't even know how big the jackpot was when he started playing. Speaking to partypoker, he explained, "It seemed like a normal morning. I was playing at about 10-11 tables and didn't even notice the jackpot for quite a while. I continued playing at several tables and a single, slightly different table finally caught my attention. I looked at the prize pool and couldn't believe my eyes: $1.2 million!"

When asked what he planned to do with the money, he replied, "Invest properly and have some fun in life!"

His two opponents still got to take home $100,000 each.

Unlikely luck

In the $100 spins, statistically the jackpot is only hit every 1,000,000 games, the probability of winning the jackpot is correspondingly tiny.

These are the probabilities for the $100 spins:

Multiplier1st Place2nd and 3rd PlaceFrequency (every 1,000,000 Spins)
12,000$1,000,000$100,0001
240$20,000$2,0002
120$10,000$1,00050
25$2,500100
10$1,00020,000
5$50085,000
3$300414,326
2$200480,521

You also have the chance to win a million-dollar payout with a smaller buy-in. The $5 spins at partypoker also have a $1,000,000 jackpot. However, statistically this one is only cracked every 10 million games.

It should also be noted here that the rake for those jackpot tournaments is outrageously high. Effectively, the $5 spins have a rake of 8% and the $100 spins still 5%. For tournaments that are over after a few minutes, this is a very high fee.

Is it possible to beat spins in the long run?

A few years ago I wrote a piece about long term profits, ROI and variance for Spin and Go tournaments. Back then there were players that made a living grinding spin and go tournaments. Nowadays this seems more unlikely with much fewer weak players in the player pool.
