How to Pick the Best Online Poker Site

Choosing between the best online poker sites can seem daunting - especially for someone new to online poker who might not know exactly what kind of poker games they want to play.

The best approach we've found after years and years of experience? The "best" online poker site is the one that's best for you.

Maybe it's something as simple as the way the software looks or which avatars you can pick. Maybe it's because of the tournament schedule with the biggest guarantees.

Whatever your poker experience, the goal of our expert poker site reviews above is simply to give you all of the information you need to make that decision.

Ultimately it might be best to choose more than one poker site and play some free online poker on each to see which one you enjoy more. After you've determined which site you prefer you can then just play most of your action there.

If you're from either the US or the UK you might want to check our country-specific Best Poker Sites toplists:

Not All Online Poker Sites are Created Equal

Poker is one of the rare games where you don’t necessarily want to play against the best players all the time. Most people, in fact, would rather sit at a table with marginal players that like to gamble.

If you find the right tables and just the right wildcards there, you could rake in some serious cash. For some that's a really important factor to consider when picking an online poker site to play.

For others, less so. They just want to punt around at the small stakes and relax after a stressful work day. Whatever your situation there's an ideal poker site out there for you.

online poker rooms

If you stick to one of the biggest poker sites, such as PokerStars888poker or partypoker, you'll definitely find some cash games or tournaments that appeal to you. If you try out one of the smaller skins on a bigger network, such as Tiger Gaming Poker, you'll likely find a lot of easy-to-beat games and a smaller community of like-minded players.

Not every site has thousands of players online at all hours of the day and there are some distinct advantages to playing on a smaller poker site. Some of the sites have notoriously bad players and it’s worth putting up with fewer players to be surrounded mostly by terrible ones.

Smaller poker sites also tend to do more aggressive marketing and will either give you a better poker bonus or lucrative loyalty rewards as you play more hands. It’s also worth remembering that certain sites are known for particular games.

Poker Stars is widely regarded as the best online poker tournament site in the world - and the best site to play mixed games - but there are arguably better cash-game sites. If you want to try out new poker variations like Short Deck Hold'em (6+ Hold'em) you can find it at PokerStars now.

If you do manage to find a poker site with extremely bad players you’ll probably want to stick around for awhile. And probably keep it a secret all for yourself! This is something we consider when reviewing online poker sites.

How Does an Online Poker Bonus Work?

The best poker sites love bringing new players to their tables. In fact player  traffic is pretty much the lifeblood of online poker and every online poker site will spend a lot of money to get players into its games.

That means every one of the best poker sites will give you some sort of reward, or "poker bonus," for opening an account and making a deposit.

Regular Bonus:
100% / $400
Exclusive Bonus
100% Up To $888

Get Bonus

The most common sign-up bonus is a Welcome Bonus or deposit match offer. That means if you deposit $50 and the site has a 100% match bonus you’ll receive $50 in free money for play.

That money comes with one caveat: you have to unlock it in stages by playing a set number of hands. It's usually a fairly reasonable amount of hands, though, and with just a little bit of play you'll be able to clear the whole thing.

Poker site bonus offers can vary a great deal, though, so make sure you pick the one that suits you best. For instance, some rooms will offer a big sign-up bonus in terms of total cash value but it'll take a lot of play to unlock it all.

Some poker sites will give you a small but immediate bonus which suits a casual player much better. Some sites, like 888poker, also offer a free bonus which doesn't even require a bonus at all. You can literally just create a new account and have real money available for game player right away.

Most poker sites will give you various benefits on top of that including tickets into free poker tournaments where you can win real money. If you don’t plan on putting in a huge amount of volume we recommend going for these smaller, more immediate reward bonuses.

We also suggest comparing a few of the best poker sites before deciding on the bonus for you.

Which Poker Site Has the Best Software?

best online poker sites

Poker software has improved immensely over the last decade so there’s really no reason to waste any time playing on a slow, boring or downright glitchy site.

Even the lesser-known online poker sites have fantastic software now but it’s still important you feel confident using the game client - especially considering you’ll likely log thousands of online poker hands on the site.

The various features on each poker site vary a bit so make sure you do a bit of research before plunking down a big deposit.

Multi-table functionality, anonymous tables, four-color decks and auto reload at the tables are a few of the features that poker players have been known to covet.

The best poker software is lightning fast, easy to use and streamlined. It should also offer a variety of features for every kind of poker player including a few exclusive modes that you won’t find anywhere else.

Generally speaking PokerStars is considered to have the best poker software for the professional or dedicated player but 888poker, partypoker and Tiger Gaming have dramatically closed the gap over the years.

Most poker sites also have play-money games you can try out to get a feel for the software so it's definitely worth your while to download the software and play around a bit before you commit to a deposit into your online account.

If you use a Mac computer or iPhone/iPad, we recommend you check out our Mac poker sites page for more advice:

How Do I Know if an Online Poker Site is Safe?

You absolutely need to make sure you’re playing on a safe site before you put your cash on the line. Fortunately, the best online poker sites are highly monitored and have to go through countless audits by gaming organizations these days.

Every aspect of the poker site is analyzed including its random number generator and encryption process. Every poker room reviewed and listed by PokerListings has received certification from an authorized online gaming regulatory body.

These days online poker sites must be completely transparent and your money is always segregated and never used for operational expenses. At any point you can withdraw your cash and receive it promptly.

No matter how appealing a "rogue" online poker site appears to be - especially if you're trying to play from the United States - it’s never worth risking your cash to get a few hands in.

Put your money on a site that ranks well on review sites and you’ll play better knowing your account is safe. Read more about legalized and safe US poker site here:

If you're playing poker from mainland Europe, Canada, Mexico, Asia or the UK you can be very confident any poker site you choose is fully licensed and certified by a legitimate oversight organization like the Malta Gaming Authority, UK Gaming Commission and so on.

What Deposit Options Do I Have on the Best Poker Sites?

online poker sites

Almost everywhere in the world online poker sites function like any other legitimate online business. Just pull out your Visa or Mastercard, punch your numbers in and money will arrive in your online poker account.

Online wallets, payment processors, debit cards and even crypto-currency like Bitcoin in some cases are also very common poker deposit options.

In the United States it's a little different. If you're in Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Delaware, online poker is fully licensed and legalized and runs just like it would in any normal casino.

While not illegal in other states, online poker is a gray area in most U.S states and finding a proper site and payment processor can be a challenge at first.

Pay special attention to the particular online poker deposit options offered by each site. These change on a regular basis and it’s worth looking into what the most recent options are.

As a special note, quite often basic credit cards will work although it sometimes takes more than one try. It’s important to note that playing online poker in the USA is not illegal - and never has been - despite what certain politicians would like you to believe.

It is, however not recommend to play on an unlicensed poker site as you can't guarantee your deposits or the game play is being properly monitored for fairness and security.

What are the Major Differences Between US and European Poker Sites?

With current legislation in the United States just 5 states (New Jersey, Nevada, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Michigan) currently have passed legislation to legalize online poker. Only Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware are currently offering active games online but they have all agreed to a player-sharing agreement.

You must either be a resident of any of those states or a visitor within the state borders to play on the US sites. Again, for more information on US poker sites, check our US online poker page.

European Sites Have Good Poker Site Traffic

PokerStars has the largest player pool and the largest selection of tournaments and cash games running around the clock. They have a wide selection for different stakes and also have good selection for non-NLHE games, such as Omaha and Limit Hold’em.

The European sites often have good volume for the most popular limits of NLHE, such as $1-2, especially at peak hours. The farther you are from peak times the less volume there will be, especially at higher stakes.

100% Up To $600

Get Bonus

Games other than NLHE have smaller volume but you should be able to find a PLO or mixed game most hours of the day, too. Finally, at the smaller sites with small player pools, most of your opponents are likely to be the site’s regulars.

PokerStars Software Still Best

Both PokerStars and Full Tilt’s software are much more user friendly then that of the European sites; navigation is easier and it is overall easier on the eyes. Some European sites have some awful software that’s just not user-friendly.

This is not merely an aesthetic point: bad software can cause you to tilt, misclick, misread the board, pass over the best games, or time out. The customer support is also typically better on PokerStars and the larger European sites are more reliable for support. Size also matters for site stability.

Great Poker Bonuses on Euro Sites

The flat rate bonus deals offered on Euro sites are definitely very attractive. There are often deposit bonuses, reload bonuses, points for cash, etc.  The America-friendly sites offer lower flat-rate deals but offer good freerolls and chances to use your frequent player points optimally. The online poker shops have a wide selection and are very affordable even for a lower-volume player.

Ignition only lets you cash out ONCE every 3 months. Unless you take bitcoin. WTF??!! I don't want bitshit. I didn't pay with it.

Mc Lol 2017-04-14 18:23:50

Ya i agree it's the most rigged site i've played. It calculates the cards as you play to sucker you. After they hate you, you cannot possibly win.The odds of some of the bad beats are astonomical or impossible.Lost with higher 4 of a kind so many times its ridiculous. And how players stay in the hand after huge bets makes you wonder whether you are playing with bots or if they can pre-see the coming cards.Avoid playing this site.Tell everyone to never play there.

Rachel Edwards 2017-01-23 19:44:34

in WSOP it's the same way there too :(

Steve Harding 2017-01-22 15:10:44

Yep it seems that way.

Jouni 2016-12-12 18:02:48

I have been playing for a year in pokerstars, total 1500 tournaments. My worldwide rating was 3000/ out of 1,2 million after 3 months. In that point i started playing lot of spin@go´s when the bad beat´s started. I have to tell you that i lost 72% of all AA and KK to lower pocket pairs or runner runner flushes or straight´s. And i am talkin only preflop all-in hands, I made a reclamation to pokerstars, that math is wrong, whats up with these constant odd´s beat!? After that, i couldnt win or didnt get to final table in tournament´s because of running really bad... I am telling with no hate, that pokerstars can and do determine, who win´s and how much, or who lose´s and how much. Nowadays i only play live poker, and this year winning´s 68 000. Dont go to Pokerstars, its a biggest scam in online poker.

u might be playing too tight. if u wait too long to get the money in, players are going to call with worse hands b/c u have no fold equity. furthermore, there may be plenty of spots where they will fold if u make a big bet/raise and ur not taking advantage, so u miss a lot of easy pots. third, u might want to use a shove/fold equity chart to help u in the later stages. fourth, u might be calling when u should raise so the pots u win aren't as big as they could be. i assume u play a tight/aggressive style (TAG), so u naturally are winning less pots but those pots are big. i would suggest considering trying to play more hands (a loose-aggressive or LAG style) by small-balling and selecting hands that play well postflop and hands that either hit big or completely miss. fifth, u may be playing an abc style, which can give better opponents an advantage figuring out what u have based on the board cards and its texture. u may want to try to mix in a few unorthodox plays like making a big bet when out of position (donk betting) or betting more than pot on the river. many poker instructors advise players to keep their hand ranges balanced, which u might not be doing. i tend to downplay that advice a little bit, as i prefer to switch up my play constantly, but will keep as consistent with that change until a given time later in the tournament when i think a change will win be bigger pots, if that makes sense. i must tell u though that i play a lot of heads up sngs, so this kind of play works better against just one opponent, or at least 3- or 4-handed. finally, it really depends on the format and buyin of the tournaments u play, as certain games attract different players. the best overall advice i could give u is to play to the level of ur opponents. it's so easy to out-think everyone in a weak game. if ur the kind of player that likes to use ur depth of knowledge, i would suggest playing bigger buyin tournaments, whereas abc styles work best for small buyins.

Scott 2016-02-26 07:57:19

Ok is it just me or is Pokerstars the WORST site for bad beats? I'm a fairly tight player yet every single tournamet I bomb out of is due to some dumb arse getting lucky every single time.

helP! im trying to find a small blinds omaha playing any time place Oahu Hi. myemail: or better yet call any time, will play tex-hold but really my pref. is omaha-ph# 941-1807

Ivo Korros 2015-12-13 21:40:46

you kidding me? even if i was winning, because of the idiocy level of most players, i cashed out and left the site because software is terrible, you salmost can't see the winning hand because the successive hand will start one second after the previous one ended. graphics are pretty poor either.
