Content Creators in Poker – Lex Veldhuis

As mentioned in the previous blog post about Brad Owen, the access and usage of social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have contributed to a surge in popularity in the poker scene.

One platform I forgot to mention was Twitch, which has had a massive impact on the viewership numbers in the consumption of poker media. The platform is appealing as players of all different levels and skills live-stream their sessions unedited and unabridged, which gives viewers full access to the action and a full insight into what a standard session can be like.

Let’s take a look at a few of the biggest poker streamers (cue Lex Veldhuis) currently showcasing their action to the world.

The Early Days

Lex Veldhuis is one of the most recognizable faces in the poker streaming world. The Dutch National came to gaming from a young age and became a top-level StarCraft player by the time he was in his late teens.

He met Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier during his StarCraft days, and the Frenchman, who was a top StarCraft pro, recommended to Veldhuis that he should try poker.

The rest was history, and Veldhuis hasn’t looked back since his poker journey began in the mid-2000s.

He made a name for himself in the online poker streets in PokerStars under the alias “RaSZi”, and appeared on the PokerStars show The Big Game in 2009.

Veldhuis began streaming on Twitch in 2016, and by 2018-19, he had become the most-watched poker streamer in the world.

Veldhuis is also known for his very raw and unfiltered reactions to particular runouts and suckouts, and is a very animated character with a lot of screen presence.

Like Owen, Veldhuis is very open and upfront about stress, downswings, and the overall mental aspect of poker, which viewers find relatable, as even the top pros have bad days at the office.

SCOOP and WCOOP Runs and Record-Breaking Numbers

In 2020, Veldhuis went on a deep run in the SCOOP‑74‑H: $10,300 NLHE [8‑Max Main Event] on PokerStars. The tournament had a prize pool of over $6,000,000 and featured a host of top players, including Michael “imluckbox” Addamo, Pablo “pabritz” Brito and Benjamin “bencb789” Rolle.

Veldhuis ultimately finished 15th in the tournament, earning $62,620 in the process. During the stream, Veldhuis’s viewer count neared 59,000 concurrent viewers, a record that still stands today in terms of concurrent viewers for a poker stream. It was also the most-watched stream that day.

His deep runs continued the following year, as he binked a score of $172,793 in the  WCOOP-80-H: $10,300 NLHE [8-Max, Progressive KO, High Roller], $750K GTD, which further increased his reputation in the streaming game, and the online poker game in general.

Impact and Legacy

Veldhuis is regarded as a pioneer in the poker streaming space and is a benchmark and inspiration for many up-and-comers.

He has endeared himself through his upfront, honest attitude and wicked sense of dry humour, and his concurrent viewership record in the poker category could stand for a very long time.

Veldhuis has also run four installments of a live poker tournament series titled “Lex Live”, which have been held in venues around Europe to great success.

This year’s Lex Live event at the Banco Casino Bratislava saw 953 total entrants take to the felt, and a €200,000 guarantee was surpassed.

Veldhuis has also produced many informative and educational videos on general tournament strategy. On previous streams, he has also shared study sessions and coaching with BBZ, which provides courses and seminars on different aspects of poker.

Final Thoughts

Veldhuis’s influence on the modern poker content creation game is unquestionable. He helped pave the way for a new generation of content creators and has helped spread awareness and visibility of the game through his content, showcasing the highs and lows of tournament poker.
