GPL Partners with China’s Sina Sports, Beijing Team in the Works
With two weeks complete the Global Poker League has entered into a landmark strategic partnership with Chinese online media giant Sina Sports.
Sina Sports is a massive player in the Chinese market and attracts over 40 million viewers every day with sports like UFC, NFL and Premier League on display.
Perhaps more interestingly Sina Sports also owns Weibo, which many call the Twitter of China.
A New Generation of Poker Fans
Partnerships like the Sina Sports deal are integral to the long-term health of the GPL, according to GPI Ceo Alex Dreyfus.
“I believe that the success of GPL will depend in its ability to create a network of strategic partners to distribute and expose its content,” he said.
“This is a landmark deal to promote the sport and the game of poker in China, with a new and fresh angle, the Global Poker League. We will launch in few weeks, a dedicated portal on Sina.com.cn, with mandarin content about GPL and poker in general. The goal is to grow a new generation of poker fans, who will learn from GPL.”
Dreyfus went on to say that Beijing will be the next franchise added to the GPL next year. Currently Celina Lin’s Hong Kong Stars are the only Asia-based team.
The partnership comes hot on the heels of an announcement last week that saw Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul join the GPL to play for the LA Sunset.
The GPL starts up again today with 6-Max matches already underway.
