Gold Nugget to host film-inspired tournament

By: Sarah Polson

Plenty of movies have mimicked the poker world, and plenty of today's poker players have been inspired by movies about the game, but now the Golden Nugget has created a tournament inspired by a movie.

The casino will host The Grand Poker Series June 6 through July 6 this summer. The tournament series is based on The Grand, a poker mockumentary filmed at the Golden Nugget which will be released to theaters this March.

The movie is a comedy that revolves around a poker tournament, and rather than following a script, the actors improvised based on what their characters are supposed to be like as they play a poker tournament.

The movie has several stars such as Woody Harrelson and Shannon Elizabeth and even some poker pros, like Doyle Brunson, make appearances.

Now the Golden Nugget will host a real Grand tournament that will feature:

  • No-Limit Hold'em
  • Poker Queens Ladies Event
  • Pot-Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better
  • H.O.R.S.E.
  • Pot-Limit Omaha
  • Senior Event
  • Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better

There will also be a celebrity event hosted by Montel Williams, called Cards, Celebrities and a Cause, which will benefit multiple sclerosis research.

With the World Series of Poker beginning at the end of May and running through mid July, The Grand will offer players another option for some more poker action when they bust out.
