Daily 3-Bet: Scott Ball Crushes, Hinkle Wins HPT, Maverick's WPT
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a misclick that’s turned into a bluff that becomes a value bet on the river of the mid-afternoon poker news world.
You can always fire your own suggestions for future 3-Bet pieces in the comments section below.
In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at Scott Ball dashing the NY Rounders playoff hopes, Blair Hinkle getting a much-deserved score and Mel Gibson’s return to the poker table.
1) Mel Gibson Pulls a Maverick in WPT Event
It’s been years since Ben Affleck and Matt Damon played the WSOP Main Event and it’s rarer these days to see A-list celebs playing tournaments.
That wasn’t the case at the World Poker Tour’s recent Mending Kids charity event with Vince Vaughn, Andrew Garfield and Gene Simmons all coming out to play.
Perhaps the most fitting, however, was beard-sporting Mel Gibson who famously played card player Bret Maverick in the classic Western flick Maverick.
The tournament also included noted poker pros Scotty Nguyen, Erik Seidel and Mike Sexton.
Just in case you were wondering, Gibson didn’t win with a royal flush over straight flush Maverick style.
There's always next time. You can learn about the Mending Kids foundation here.
2) Blair Hinkle Wins HPT Lincoln
Remember when Blair Hinkle won a tournament for $1m on Full Tilt Poker and then Black Friday happened?
That was awful.
Fortunately we’ve got some more positive news from Hinkle today as he went ahead and outlasted 437 entries to win the latest Heartland Poker Tour Event Main Event in Lincoln for $223,411.
That brings the Kansas City native’s overall lifetime live tournament haul to just shy of $4m.
Let’s hope getting that first-place cash home is a little easier this time around.
3) Twitch’s Scott Ball Wrecks NY Rounders
The Las Vegas Moneymakers' Scott Ball took a wrecking ball to NY Rounders Bryn Kenney in a pivotal GPL match yesterday.
Ball, who’s Twitch.tv’s poker community manager and not a full time pro, managed to sweep Kenney 3-0 and lock the NY Rounders out of the GPL playoffs.
Phil Galfond's 2-1 win over Felipe Ramos locked up the last playoff spot for the San Francisco Rush.
Unfortunately the Moneymakers are out of the playoffs so they’ll have to be content with playing the role of spoiler.
Not a bad performance from Ball, who definitely raised some eyebrows when Chris Moneymaker selected him in the GPL draft.
It’s actually the last day of regular season action in the Eurasian conference and you can follow along here. It has major playoff implications so play should be tight.
In other news, GPL partner PokerStars is incorporating GPL team logos into its client and you can now pick them as your avatar. Here are some highlights from the aforementioned match:
