Daily 3-Bet: Liv’s Great Escape, Baby Mercier, The Johnny Chan Play

2016 WSOP Johnny Chan3
Never forget the Johnny Chan play.

The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet once escaped the mid-afternoon poker news prison cell by using only a toothpick, a chip rack and a Johnny Chan-branded energy drink.

You can always fire suggestions for future 3-Bet pieces in the comments section below.

In today’s Daily 3-Bet we’ll take a look at Liv Boeree’s new role, a future poker prodigy and the play that conceivably won Johnny Chan hundreds of thousands of dollars.

1) Liv Boeree as Escape Room Host

PokerStars pro Liv Boeree is co-hosting the first-ever Escape Room World Championships this Saturday!

Wait, what?

It turns out that escape rooms, famously popular with millennials and corporate team leaders, are getting a World Championship courtesy of sponsor Red Bull.

For the uninitiated, an escape room is a physical adventure game in which participants are locked in a room and have to use items in the room to solve puzzles and eventually unlock the room.

The Red Bull Mind Gamers World Finals Escape Room championship will be a little more advanced with a never-seen-before room based on quantum logic and designed by an actual professor.

20 teams will compete in the challenge, which takes place in Budapest, Hungary.

Boeree should be more than qualified as host with over $3.1m in live tournament earnings and that Astrophysics' degree.

2) Baby Mercier on the Way

What do you get when you combine ultra-skilled poker players Natasha Barbour and Jason Mercier?

It appears we’re going to find out in 12 weeks because Natasha is pregnant!

Jason and Natasha (who got engaged at the 2016 WSOP and then married later that year) announced the news via Twitter this week.

It’s refreshing because the poker lifestyle and having a family doesn’t always go together perfectly although there have been some notable exceptions.

Of course the Mercier/Barbours already have a child of sorts in their dog Marshmellow, which has been to more final tables than most humans.

Congrats to the happy couple and to everyone else get your “born to 3-Bet” jokes ready.

3) Negreanu Analyzes the Johnny Chan Play

Remember Johnny Chan?

Chan isn’t quite as relevant in poker these days (although he’s still a big draw in Asia) so its easy forget that he was one of the most dominant players the game has ever seen and pioneered several significant plays.

The 10-WSOP bracelet winner got a lot of value out a special move that bears some similarities to a stop-and-go or floating the flop.

Daniel Negreanu continued his excellent strategy videos on YouTube this week by taking a look at the so-called “Chan Play” and its relevance in today’s game.
