Daily 3-Bet: Lasry Folds, Ronaldo Live, Arieh Effect

Josh Arieh
Arieh: Could have shit all over the poker boom.

The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is the heir to the throne of Zamunda who breaks with tradition and travels to America to find his afternoon poker news queen.

Any tips or recommendations for a future 3-Bet, drop a note in the comments.

Today in the 3-Bet we find the billionaire pegged to take the US ambassadorship to France sunk by a poker connection, newly signed Team PokerStars SportStar Ronaldo plying his game on the live feed from LAPT Brazil and another “what might have been” moment about Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 Main Event title.

1) Billionaire Lasry Bails on Obama for Trincher Tie

The day is coming soon in America where being linked to high-stakes poker games and having an ilk for gambling will be considered an asset to someone's job prospects.

Being connected to the Russian mob... still probably not a highlight for the CV. But the poker, definitely.

Billionaire Mark Lasry, head of the $12b Avenue Capital hedge fund and President Obama's choice for the ambassadorship to France, is unfortunately a bit ahead of the curve on both counts.

According to the New York Post, Lasry was set to take the position and move to France until Illya Trincher, one of Lasry's pals, was one of the indictees in the FBI's massive Russian mob sweep last week.

Lasry's accused of no wrongdoing but reportedly withdrew from consideration because of his ties to Trincher and, loosely, his predeliction for hosting "winner-take-all card games in his Upper East Side mansion where the stakes can get as high as $20,000 per hand."

Called "a big-time gambler in golf and poker" and a "Master of the Universe type," Lasry still seems like the perfect choice to us but I guess that's why we don't work in HR at the White House.

2) Ronaldo Throwing Chips Around on LAPT Live Stream

Ronaldo at the feature table.

There's always a bit of eye-rolling in the poker community when a celebrity gets a poker sponsorship over an established pro but there's no questioning the potential benefits.

Mainstream media coverage, awestruck fans clamoring to share the felt with an international icon ... the new money/energy it brings to the game far outweigh the case for a more "legitimate" player.

Nobody does it better than PokerStars either as its Team PokerStars SportsStars - tennis superheroes Rafael Nadal and Boris Becker and Dutch Olympian Fatima Moreira de Melo - bring the above in spades.

They also have some poker chops to justify it. Becker just made a solid run in the EPT Berlin Main Event, Nadal has scooped a tourney win on PokerStars and de Melo holds her own on the EPT circuit.

Next up to prove his mettle? PokerStars' latest signee - Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo - who will have his game tested on the feature table at the LAPT Brazil main event today.

If you want to see his effect in person, watch the live streamright here on and follow Ronaldo on Twitter for updates.

3) Arieh: Could Have Butterflied Poker Boom

There are a couple of things to be thankful for in this Josh Arieh tweet from earlier today, not the least of which is the potential "butterfly effect" an Arieh satellite win might have had on the last decade of poker.

We're also pretty happy he didn't "shit out on him" back then too.
