888poker rolled out one of its most compelling software updates ever this month with support for larger lobbies, team tournaments and a new web cam mode.

Although the lobby improvement is likely welcome and certain players enjoy team tournaments, the real news is the “Pokercam” tables.

A selection of tables in the 888poker lobby will be designated as Pokercam-only tables and every player will be required to have a web cam if they wish to play.

Players will then have the ability to see each other face-to-face and pick up tells, just like live poker. In addition players will also be able to speak to each other via a built-in communications client similar to Skype.

The tables will be marked with a webcam icon but the number of viewers for each table will be limited to 30 players.

Pokercam tables had been in development at 888poker for some time but they are now available to every player on the site.

"We believe that real poker is not just about winning money, but it's about the thrill, the fun, the excitement and the social poker experience," said Maytal Ginzburg VP Poker at 88Holdings.

"Online poker has been traditionally focused on the 'money making' element - we feel that there is no reason why online poker should not enable players to meet, socialize and play together."

To celebrate the new online poker software 888poker is giving an $8 instant bonus to players who sign up this month.

The promotion is limited to players in the following countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and South Africa.
