What To Do Off The Felt

Poker tours like SiGMA have added emphasis on off-the-felt activities, like meet and greets, and tickets to an MMA fight. However, not all of those in attendance will be package holders, and there is plenty to do and see in the sprawling metropolis that is São Paulo. Here are some ideas of what to do, see, and eat throughout the event, whether you have won or bought a package or not.

What and Where to Eat

São Paulo is a vast city, with plenty of eye-catching sights and a strong culinary scene. Brazil is a melting pot of different cultures, and that is reflected in the food. There are plenty of options for a variety of budgets and tastes, from street markets, Japanese-Brazilian fusion, and Brazilian BBQ. Italian food and Arabian dishes are also commonly available, so there truly is something for everyone. Outside of the Bar e Restaurante Monte Carlo, a short walk from the venue, the Famiglia Mancini Trattoria is one of São Paulo’s most famous Italian restaurants, offering big portions and a lively atmosphere. For those looking for a meat feast, the Parrillada Fuego Celeste – Vila Mariana is a 5 to 10-minute journey by car. It is a Uruguayan barbecue experience with a wide selection of grilled meats.

For those looking for a taste of Brazil, try a plate of Virado à Paulista, the city’s signature dish. It is a filling combo of rice, beans, sauteed kale, pork chop, sausage, fried egg, and fried banana, perfect to fuel the engine ahead of a day’s grind at the tables. Coxinhas are croquettes stuffed with shredded chicken, and are great for quick bites on break times, and are available in bakeries and snack bars. Pastel de Feiras are also good for a quick snack, and they are crispy, deep‑fried pastry filled with cheese, meat, hearts of palm, shrimp, or tomato and mozzarella.

Places To See

For those looking to explore the city away from the tables, check out Avenida Paulista, one of the city’s highest points. Stretching for almost 3 kilometers, it is home to the São Paulo Museum of Art, South America’s largest and most comprehensive collection of fine art, and home to sculptures and sketches by European greats Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pablo Picasso.

The Ibirapuera Park is a 35-minute walk, or 15 minute car journey from the Monte Carlo Club, and is South America’s most visited park. Situated in the heart of the concrete jungle and spanning a massive 390 acres, it is home to museums, monuments, and an auditorium designed by Oscar Niemeyer, one of the most important figures in modern architecture. It is a bustling, scenic space, and one to consider visiting to catch some sun before or after a session.

What’s Next?

Good luck to those looking to qualify for this exciting event on the South American continent. It is worth getting involved in the satellite streets with the $5 buy in. In this poker writer’s opinion, the $470 ticket also represents quality value considering what is included and the environment of the event. I will be jealous of all of those in attendance!

That’s all for now, folks. Until next time.
