How Can a Recreational Player Use GTO Wizard?

Hi everyone! My name is Alex. I’m 30 years old. I’m a big poker fan and have been writing about poker for the past 10 years, but I rarely play. So, I’m 100% a recreational player (a slightly advanced one, perhaps). I’ve never played 12 tables at once — 4 tables from my MacBook is my maximum.

I played the $25 The Weekender Bounty Closer, $200K GTD. Unfortunately, this isn’t a story about my victory. I busted in one hand and spent a long time wondering whether I made the right decision by shoving. So I decided to analyze it with GTO Wizard.

Did I play AQo correctly? Let’s ask GTO Wizard

PokerCraft profile

First, I need to find that particular hand. I open the poker client and go to PokerCraft. I click on my avatar, then select PokerCraft in the bottom-left corner. I go to My Tournaments, find The Weekender Bounty Closer — Game History, and get a list of all the hands I played. I select the one with AQo. Here it is in the screenshot.

Now I need to enter all the necessary information into GTO Wizard.

To analyze the hand, I go to the Study section. Now I need to enter all the relevant information. I’m using the free version of GTO Wizard, which allows me to calculate situations for 8-max MTTs at different stack depths. We were playing with 25 BB stacks.

GTO Wizard Study

I set the parameters: MTT — Chip EV — 8-max (unfortunately, calculating 7-max spots is only available in the paid version). For Stack Type, I select Symmetric — Avg 25 BB. Then I enter all the positional information.

I opened from the HJ, the player immediately behind me 3-bet, everyone else folded, I shoved, and my opponent called. He had pocket aces.

GTO Wizard AQo push

GTO Wizard says AQo is played as a shove from my position with 100% frequency. In fact, I was supposed to shove hands like A7s, A5s, 88, and sometimes even 44. Notice that with pocket aces, GTO Wizard recommends trapping.

Conclusion:

I simply got unlucky in this hand. It happens.

The only question that remains is how much my decisions would have changed if the calculations had been for 7-max and taken the PKO format into account.

Unfortunately, the free version of GTO Wizard only allows you to work with preflop decisions in heads-up spots. When I decide to become a poker pro and study the game at a more advanced level, I’ll definitely get a subscription so I can work on postflop and multiway spots.
