Opening its doors on April 5^th, 2022, BetMGM Poker Ontario went live in the newest and biggest regulated poker and sports betting market in North America.  Part of the partypoker network, the MGM Brand, one of the most recognizable brands in the gambling space since establishing itself in the US in 2013, brings its experience to Ontario.  We look at what the poker room has to offer Canadian residents living in the biggest province in the country.

BetMGM Bonus Poker Promotions

Due to the network being limited to Ontario poker players only, there is considerably more traffic on the site in the evenings and weekends and players have more choice available to them at night.

Sit & Go Tournaments

Running when full, players can expect to see SnG’s of various formats and stakes available 24/7 in the client for players to get their fill whenever they are ready to battle.  Players should note that they may wait a while for some SnG’s to run during the day as the traffic is lower during the typical work week but does pick up once the offices let out.

Competition and Traffic

While BetMGM is one of the most recognizable brands in the gambling industry, BetMGM Poker is a relatively new player in the space and faces stiff competition from a highly competitive market in Ontario with several other big players in the space.  First and foremost is partypoker Ontario. Although BetMGM Poker went live before partypoker Ontario, BetMGM Poker is a brand-new operator in Ontario which has to attract new players to its site, while partypoker Ontario got to merge existing players on their global site into the new fenced in.  This means that BetMGM Poker must attract all new players. The interesting part is that BetMGM has been making a huge push into the market with lots of advertising for their casino, but relatively no advertising has been done for the poker site.

Next is 888poker Ontario was the first to launch one day before BetMGM Poker went live and has been in the poker industry since 2002.  Many players in the province will recognize and play on 888poker already, potentially decreasing the amount of money players are willing to move into BetMGM Poker. The advantage BetMGM has over 888poker though is traffic; the shared liquidity BetMGM has with both partypoker Ontario and bwin provides a big advantage over a smaller site like 888poker Ontario.

PokerStars Ontario didn’t go live until the end of June 2022 but is one of the world’s biggest online poker brands and has been making a push in the space from an advertising point of view as well with plenty of commercials and in-game with the Toronto Maple Leafs and on CFL broadcasts.  Given that it was one of the big two players on the global scene to start with, PokerStars will already have a broad base of players right out of the game and pose a serious challenger for Bet MGM to overcome.

The final skin on the market is the WSOP.ca of GGPoker.  The biggest online poker room launched in Ontario at the end of September and along with PokerStars, brought a large player base into the site right away.  Coupled with the WSOP branding, BetMGM will have an uphill battle to get market share against two of the biggest names in the poker world.

iPhone users will be able to download the BetMGM poker app directly from the App store, while Android users can get into the game by visiting the Google Play store and downloading from there.  Links also exists on the BetMGM Poker Ontario website for users that want to get the app via the website or if they want to download the program onto their computer.  Note that online play through their website is currently not available.

BetMGM Poker comes with multiple ways for players to get support.  They offer a live chat option that is available 24/7 through the website and poker client, but there is an extensive FAQ section on their website that answers many of the common questions that players may have. Players can also e-mail support directly if they are unable to access live chat or if screenshots and files need to be submitted to the team for their review.

Looking at the entire picture, there is serious potential for BetMGM Poker Ontario to make noise in the new Ontario online poker market.  Being backed by the partypoker software and network automatically increases the traffic available to players and having the mega bonus program of both BetMGM Rewards and MGM Rewards available to all players, coupled with a better initial bonus offer 100% up to $1k, plus up to $75 of tournament tickets.  The lack of advertising done by BetMGM on the poker client is slightly puzzling, however overall, the room packs more for poker players than other networks does. Players who do not have an account in the partypoker network should seriously take a look at joining via BetMGM Poker Ontario for the most value for your money.
