Good poker sites offer a wide variety of poker tournaments. Hosting a handful of low buy-in No-Limit Texas Hold'em tournaments isn't enough for a site to be considered among the best. There should be tournaments available in a number of different playing forms, and the buy-ins should vary as well.

These are some of the different types of tournaments you might find at the same online poker site:

Multi-Table Tournaments - This is the standard poker tournament. Everyone who wants to play in the tournament pays the buy-in and then competes for the prize pool. Normally the number of entrants is restricted. There can be 500 seats, or 1,000, or even more, in a single tournament. There are multi-table online poker tournaments with buy-ins as low as $1, while the most expensive ones typically require a buy-in of around $500. The number of starting chips and the blind structure differ from tournament to tournament.

Sit-and-Go Tournaments - A sit-and-go is a small poker tournament with a restricted number of seats. Normally there are 10 seats in a sit-and-go tournament, but there can be as many as 20 seats or more. Sit-and-gos are not scheduled to start at an exact time, but begin when all the seats have been filled. The buy-in normally ranges from $1 to $500, and the pace of a sit-and-go is normally pretty fast.

Heads-Up Tournaments - A heads-up tournament is a poker tournament with only two players in it. This is not a very common variation, but some poker sites offer heads-up tournaments.

Freerolls - Freerolls are poker tournaments without buy-ins. They exist for players who want the chance to play and win some money without risking any of their own. However, the number of seats is usually restricted, and freerolls generally fill up pretty fast. In addition, freeroll tournaments are normally very loose and wild since the participants don't have any of their own money on the line.

Money-Added/-Guaranteed Tournaments - This is when the poker site guarantees a part of the prize pool. Many poker players look for tournaments of this kind to find added value.

Satellite Tournaments - Satellites are qualifying tournaments to either other online tournaments or live events. For example, 2003 WSOP Champion Chris Moneymaker and 2004 WSOP Champion Greg Raymer both qualified for the World Series of Poker Main Event through PokerStars.com satellites.

Promotional Tournaments - These are special tournaments that poker sites offer to their loyal customers, which might yield cash prizes or seats to big live events.

Turbo Tournaments - Turbo Tournaments are poker tournaments with an extra-fast structure. Both multi-table tournaments and sit-and-gos come with turbo structure.
