Dan Cates + dolphins = magic.
The PokerListings Daily 3-Bet is a heartwarming swim with dolphins while the rest of the poker world is swamped by the afternoon poker news high seas.
Any suggestions for a future 3-Bet, feel free to drop a note in the comments.
Today in the 3-Bet we find poker icon Phil Hellmuth finally immortalized, as he should be, in bronze, Johnny Lodden taking a bath in some overseas five-card Omaha games and high-stakes online legend Dan "Jungleman” Cates trading sharks for dolphins (sorry, but we had to).
1) Hellmuth Cast in Bronze by Artist Jon Hair
We’re not exactly sure who commissioned it or what it’s particular reason for existence is but there is now a life-size bronze bust of Phil Hellmuth's head and torso out in the world.
And we couldn't be happier. What took so long for it to happen? We just don't know. The world makes no sense sometimes.
Nonetheless, the egregious wrong has now been righted and the bronze bust, created by artist Jon Hair, can grow green and pockmarked over time like the rest of us.
Hair has also done busts of Annie Duke and Doyle Brunson but we’re equally unclear how and why those came about.
Befitting Hellmuth’s legacy the description of his career alongside the picture of the bust is equal parts amazing and confusing:
“Phil Hellmuth is an American professional poker player. He holds a world record of 11 World Series of Poker bracelets, for winning the Main Event of the 1989 World Series of Poker.
“He is also a member of the Poker Hall of Fame.” Find the pics of all three pro busts here.
2) Lodden Takes a Bath in Five-Card Omaha
We expect this is an extremely rare occurrence but it seems online high-stakes legend Johnny Lodden has taken a bath in some recent overseas live games. According to his most recent blog post:
“I've spent the ten last days abroad playing PLO. It went pretty bad - I lost almost every day and didn't feel that I played that well in the end. Additionally, you can safely say the poker gods were not on my side.
"I think the main problem with this trip was that I did not go off the hotel area for the entire duration of it. I got fed up with being dealt bad hands, and felt starved socially for the last days, but since the game was potentially very profitable I couldn't find it in me to go home. In retrospect, I realize that I should have taken a break for a day or two."
While we're somewhat heartened the same leaks in our game can afflict one of the best pros in the world, we never enjoy seeing PokerListings favorite Lodden take a hit.
Lodden doesn't say exactly where he was (Russia? Macau?) in the post, but interestingly he says the game was five-card Omaha. Read Lodden's full post here.
3) Jungleman Swims With Dolphins in Malta
We love this series of photos of Dan “Jungleman” Cates swimming with dolphins so much we don’t want to ruin it with words.
Suffice to say if your heart doesn’t expand a bit looking at these you may be be dead inside.
See the full set of pics here. Stay tuned for more in our "Elite Poker Pros with Cute Animals" series in the new year. We got big plans for you, koalas.
