David Grey is a legendary and well-respected highstakes poker player who is already hanging around in the poker industry for quite a while now. David was in there from the get-go and is hardly to be seen in the spotlights. He likes to fly below the radar but has nevertheless a very impressive palmaris.

From Horse Races to Poker

David Grey was born in Henderson, Nevada. About his youth there is not much known about, but what we do know is that he graduated his High School and that is where is education ended as well.

David came first in touch with poker when he was attending horse races and in between would pass his time by playing Seven Card Stud poker. Soon later he became a very skilled player and decided to give poker a go. He is famous about his all-round playing style and is someone who follows the rules of the books by heart. With great self-control, levelheaded game selection skills, and above all an excellent cash player, makes him one of the best in the world during the prime of poker in the late 90’s, early 2000’s.

When asking players such as Howard Lederer or Larry Flynt, David Grey is right on the top of the list when it comes to best high-stakes cash game players. Throughout the nineties he has played in many nosebleed cash games with the likes of Larry Flynt, Rene Angelil (Celine Dion’s husband), and many more.

When being asked about why David is not attending international tournaments overseas during the years, he answered that he does not believe that travelling outside of Las Vegas is bound to find juicy poker games and tournaments.

The Poker Career of David Grey

The first tournament cash of David dates back all the way to January 1987. During the America’s Cup Of Poker, he became 5th in an 2-7 Draw tournament, good for $6,600. Despite it was a min cash, it is worthwhile mentioned it because he competed against top players such as William Baxter, Roger Moore and eventual winner of the tournament, Stu Ungar.

His First big cash happened in the $2,560 Limit Hold’em event during the Hall Of Fame Poker Classic of 1991, bested a field of 107 players, good for $107,000.

When looking through the results of David Grey you can barely see anything other than mixed games, which shows he is a very skilled poker player. But it does not necessarily mean that he does not play No-Limit Hold’em. After dozens of cashes in the mixed games, he made it to the final 9 of the World Series of Poker in 2003. Where Phil Ivey busted in 10th place, it was eventually Chris Moneymaker himself sending David Grey to the rail in 8th place, not long before he would win the Main Event and being responsible for the biggest poker boom in history.

Remarkable Achievements

As mentioned before, there are many achievements on the palmaris of David Grey. With two bracelets in mixed game events, winning season 2 of the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, being a feared contestant at the cash game tables, he has also played parts in books about poker.

His first WSOP bracelet was won during the $2,500 Seven Card Stud event. The first prize of $199,000 was immense in 1999. His second bracelet was won during the $5,000 2-7 No-Limit event, scooping the first prize of $365,135, which is also his biggest cash on his all-time poker results list.
