The Poker Community Says Goodbye to David Sklansky

On March 23rd, 2026, Chad Holloway shared some tragic news: David Sklansky, one of the most famous players and authors in poker history, suddenly passed away as a result of heart failure at the age of 78.

While his last media mentions weren’t all that positive, Sklansky has put poker in debt with his contribution in both theory and mathematical approach. His poker books influenced more than a few generations of players with one of them being a game-changer: The Theory of Poker.

We express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones on this irreparable loss.

David Sklansky as a Poker Player

Sklansky was most active as a player between 1976 and 2010, with a few appearances from time to time up to 2024.

His analytical approach, view of poker as a mathematical game, and deep interest in systematic studying and playing, made him a fierce and respected opponent.

In his career, Sklansky won ten live events, including three WSOP ones:

YearTournamentPrize
1982$800 Mixed Doubles Seven Card Stud$8,800
1982$1,000 Draw High$15,500
1983$1,000 Limit Omaha$25,500

He also came within a step of WSOP victory three times, finishing the tournament as a runner-up:

YearTournamentPrize
1977$10,000 Seven-Card Stud Split$17,500
1984$1,000 Pot Limit Omaha$33,600
1989$5,000 Seven-Card Stud$96,250

Sklansky’s best known cash was $419,040 for his 3rd place finish in the $10,000 WPT 2006 Championship event. In the end, his official winnings in live tournaments slightly exceeded $1,4M — but no one knows what his real wealth amounted to.

However, the most remarkable thing about Sklansky was not his success as a player but his significance as a poker theorist.

David Sklansky as a Book Author

Sklansky’s first book — Hold’em Poker — was published in 1976 and is highly regarded as the first detailed work on Texas Hold’em. While the book had achieved moderate success and was praised by professional players, real success was still to come.

Two years later, The Theory of Poker saw the light of day and almost immediately made Sklansky a (poker) household name, becoming the most popular and important book about poker for decades to come.

Throughout his career, David had written and co-authored over 20 books on poker and gambling, including but not limited to:

  • Sklansky on Razz (1983)
  • Super/System (1979, co-authored with Doyle Brunson)
  • Getting the Best of it! (1997)
  • Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players (1999, co-authored with Mason Malmuth)
  • DUCY? Exploits, Advice, and Ideas of the Renowned Strategist (2010)

While Sklansky’s poker books have generally been well received and praised for the depth of their mathematical analysis, they have also been criticized for not being beginner-friendly and forsaking other pivotal aspects of poker for the sake of mathematical analysis.

Theory of Poker remains the most well-known and popular poker strategy book. At least, it continues to top the charts on different poker websites and forums — even when many reviewers admit that its content has become outdated over the years.
