PokerStars Sunday Million Changes to Knockout Format

PokerStars Sunday Million Changes to Knockout Format

The Sunday Million, PokerStars' iconic weekly flagship event, will be held permanently as a Progressive Knock-Out tournament (PKO for short) starting June 12, 2022.

The Sunday Million has been around since 2006, and it was one of the first tournaments with a weekly guarantee of at least $1,000,000. In its 16 years of existence, the Sunday Million has maintained the traditional tournament format, cutting the buy-in in half from $215 a few years ago and allowing re-entries. Occasionally, there were PKO special editions of the Sunday Million spread throughout the year. However, as PKO tournaments become more popular, PokerStars will permanently convert the event to a bounty tournament starting June 12, 2022.

More chips, fewer players per table

But that's not the only change for the Sunday Million. There will also be changes to the number of players per table and the blind structure will be adjusted as well as significantly larger starting stacks.

The most important facts about the new Sunday Million:

  • Mode: The Sunday Million will become a PKO tournament.
  • Buy-in: $109 standard buy-in with special editions throughout the year.
  • Players per table: Tables will change from 9-max to 8-max
  • Stacks: 50,000 starting stacks (currently 10,000), that's 200 big blinds to start
  • Levels: 15-minute levels during the late-registration period, 12-minute levels for the rest of Day 1, 15-minute levels for Day 2
  • Game duration: Day 1 now ends earlier than before at 01:05 CET (currently it ends at 02:50 CET)
  • Time bank: Regular time bank with more time at the final table

Regardless of its structure, the Sunday Million has remained the most prestigious weekly online poker tournament in the world. In 2006, the player with the ominous nick "aaaaaaaa" won the very first Sunday Million. Last year, Vanessa "Niffler" Kade won the biggest Sunday Million ever for $1.5 million, and after 16 years, the Sunday Million is still one of the most important tournaments on every poker player's calendar.

Satellites to the Sunday Million

Satellites to the Sunday Million will continue to be held daily, with a few modifications:

  • Players who have already won a seat to the Sunday Million via a Sit & Go satellite will not be able to participate in any further Sit & Go satellites to the Sunday Million this week. This is to prevent players from farming the satellites.
  • Daily hybrid tournaments will be held Monday through Saturday with $20,000 in Sunday Million tickets guaranteed.
  • 100 Sunday Million tickets will be available each week via a second chance draw.
    • If you are eliminated from a Sunday Million satellite, you will receive a ticket to the Sunday Million second chance draw.
    • Limited to only one entry per week per player

Whether you play just one tournament per week or grind every day, the Sunday Million remains one of the biggest draws in all of online poker.
