Know your card games – Teen Patti versus poker

Some of these games are actually relatively similar, seemingly coming from common backgrounds, while others are worlds apart. Two such games are Teen Patti and poker.

Across the globe, card games have been hugely popular for hundreds of years. No matter where in the world you are, some kind of card game has most likely grown up within the local culture. Some of these games are actually relatively similar, seemingly coming from common backgrounds, while others are worlds apart. Two such games are Teen Patti and poker. Both Teen Patti and poker offer players a lot of entertainment, but they stem from rather different backgrounds and cultures. While they are very different, both can now be accessed online with the greatest of ease.

This is especially true if you use sites like Comeon.com, which offers both Teen Patti and a range of poker variants in live form allowing players to experience the thrill and excitement of both these card games. However, for players looking to get into either of these games, it's very important to know the difference as this can make an impact when playing.

What is Teen Patti?

When discussing these two disparate card games, it's important to take a look at what each of them offers. Developed in Northern India, Teen Patti often rivals poker in its popularity. Also known as Flash or 3 Patti, the game has been around for centuries and it is popularly played at family dinners or festivals. The fundamental difference between Teen Patti and poker is that there's less strategy and more luck involved when playing this game.

To play Teen Patti, each player is dealt three cards which are kept face down. This is where the element of luck comes in. Where the game has similarities to poker is the fact that in order to win the round, the player must have the best hand combination. These combinations are different from poker, but nevertheless have an ascending value to them determining who wins the pot - another similarity to playing any of the poker variants.

Taking a look at poker

Over the years there have been a number of different poker variants emerge. Each one has some slight differences from the other options out there. However, no matter which version is played, they all require strategy in order to win. For the sake of this comparison though, we'll take a look at the most popular poker variant out there, Texas Holdem. This version sees each player given two cards, which only they see. Three communal cards are then dealt.

Through a series of subsequent rounds, two more cards are placed on the community cards. During each round, players will also place bets, raising the size of the pot until all the cards are dealt. Players then need to form the best possible hand in order to win the pot. This is made up of five cards and can be any combination of the cards in their hand and the community cards that are on the table.

Chance versus strategy

As we've mentioned briefly, the biggest difference between these two games is that Teen Patti is luck-based whereas Texas Holdem requires a strategy. With poker, there are five cards out that anyone can use so by observing the other players it is possible to try and determine their actions. It's also possible to guess what cards they may have in their hand from the cards that are out and that have come before. The other players are an influence.

In Teen Patti on the other hand, no one sees their cards at all. There is nothing to influence the bets being made around the game other than sheer luck. In Teen Patti, players will look at their cards when they want to and can then decide whether or not to bet, taking away that more thrilling edge to the game that poker has. However, players are still betting on who they think has the highest card.

Placing bets

One of the other main differences between the games comes with the betting. In poker players will be placing bets both before and after every card is dealt. The pot must also have the same amount of money from every player before the next card is revealed. However, in Teen Patti, a minimum stake is agreed upon and added to the pot before the game even starts and there's no need to keep placing bets throughout the game.

Controlling the pot

In addition to the poker pot growing throughout the game, poker players will also try and control how much money is in the pot. This is possible due to the fact that players can actually employ different strategies. In order to control the pot, players will utilize the knowledge they have of their own hand and their subsequent predictions of what the other players hold - they then determine the size of the bet for that next round of poker.

Similarities between Teen Patti and Holdem

However, both Teen Patti and Texas Holdem are very similar in their origins. Essentially they are both a form of poker in that there are cards dealt, bets placed and the aim of each game is to score the highest card combination. Each of these games is also played with a full deck of 52 cards and the stakes within the games are also determined before the game has actually begun so that players can budget their play accordingly.

On top of this, both games end with a showdown. This is where all the players that are still in the game will show their hands to each other. The player with the highest combination will win the game and collect the pot. Both games will also have a winner if all other players, bar one, stop fighting for the pot and fold their hand. The winning player is not obligated to show their hand in this instance.

Summary

While there are major differences, both of these games offer lots of excitement. They require slightly different skills, but at the end of the day both of them are about analysing the game and determining when is the best time to place another bet, and how much that bet should be. On top of this, both are equally fun to play. It really is down to personal preference which is why we recommend going out and trying them both!
