A Dozen Bet in roulette is a bet on a group of 12 numbers. On the layout, there are three options: the 1st dozen (1–12), the 2nd dozen (13–24), and the 3rd dozen (25–36). You choose one group and place your chips on the area labeled 1st 12, 2nd 12, or 3rd 12\. The bet wins if the ball lands on any number in your chosen dozen. One key point is that neither 0 nor 00 (in American roulette) belongs to any dozen. If 0 or 00 hits, a Dozen Bet loses.
Payout and odds
In standard roulette, a Dozen Bet pays 2:1. This means that on a win you earn profit equal to twice your stake, and you also get your original stake back. Example: you bet 10 units on a dozen and the ball lands on a number inside that group. You win 20 units in profit and your 10-unit stake is returned, so you receive 30 units in total.
Your chance of winning depends on the wheel type because zero is not part of any dozen. European roulette has 37 pockets (0–36), and a Dozen Bet covers 12 winning numbers. That is 12 out of 37, which is about 32%. American roulette has 38 pockets (0 and 00), so the chance is 12 out of 38, about 31%. Rare non-standard versions may use different rules or payouts, and the table rules will state this clearly.
How a Dozen Bet compares to similar bets
A Dozen Bet is an outside bet because it’s placed in the outside betting area and it covers many numbers at once. It is often compared to a Column Bet since both cover 12 numbers and both pay 2:1 in standard roulette. The difference is how the numbers are grouped. Dozens split the layout by order: 1–12, 13–24, and 25–36. Columns split the numbers into vertical lines on the table layout.
Here is a simple example. The number 16 is part of the 2nd dozen because it sits in the 13–24 range. At the same time, 16 belongs to the 1st column on the layout. So a bet on the 2nd dozen wins if 16 hits, while a bet on the 2nd column does not. New players mix these bets up because the payout looks the same, but the winning numbers are different. If you want a bet that covers a consecutive range of 12 numbers, choose a dozen. If you want a vertical group shown on the layout, choose a column.

Is a Dozen Bet the same as a column bet?
