In craps, ‘Crap Out’ is a short, informal way to describe a bad start to a round. It happens on the shooter’s very first roll and can wipe out the most common bet on the table in a single throw.
What Does “Crap Out” Mean in Craps?
In craps, a Crap Out is tied to the come-out roll, the phase before any point is set. If at this moment the shooter rolls 2, 3, or 12, which are called the craps numbers, no point is established, and the shooter keeps the dice for the next come-out roll. For players, the important part is how this single roll settles the main bets on the layout:
- Pass Line: The basic bet made on the shooter’s side. On the first roll, you need a 7 or 11 to win, and you lose if the shooter craps out with 2, 3, or 12\. If any other number starts the round, you then need that same number to appear again before a 7\.
- Don’t Pass: The opposite bet against the shooter. On the first roll, you are interested in 2 or 3, because they make the bet win, you push on 12, and you lose with 7 or 11\. If another number starts the round, you then need a 7 to show up before that number appears again.
- Any Craps and similar proposition bets: Target the same totals (2, 3, and 12), so they can pay out when the shooter craps out, but they generally come with a higher house edge.
Crap Out vs Seven Out
New players often mix up Crap Out and seven out, yet they mark different moments in the game.
- Crap Out: Only on the come-out roll. The shooter rolls 2, 3, or 12, Pass Line bets lose, no point is set, and the same shooter keeps the dice.
- Seven out: After a point is established. If the shooter rolls a 7 before repeating the point number, most bets backing the point lose, and the dice pass to the next shooter.
Both hurt Pass Line bettors, but only seven out ends the shooter’s entire turn.
Crap Out in Online, Live, and Land-Based Craps
The meaning of crapping out is the same everywhere. The difference is how the dice are handled:
- Land-based casinos: A real player throws physical dice. A 2, 3, or 12 on the come-out roll is a Crap Out and settles Pass/Don’t Pass bets in the usual way.
- Live dealer craps: A real shooter rolls the dice on camera, while software tracks bets and applies the same Crap Out rules.
- RNG online craps: A random number generator replaces physical dice, but 2, 3, and 12 on the come-out roll still count as a crap-out with identical outcomes for Pass and Don’t Pass.

That is possible. Each time it happens, it counts as a new Crap Out, the round resets, and the shooter takes another come-out roll with fresh bets.
Can you Crap Out after a point is set?
No. Crapping out only applies to the first roll of a round. Once a point is set (a number like 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 that the shooter is now trying to roll again), 2, 3, and 12 are just regular non-scoring totals.
