Top Unusual Poker Tips to Confuse Opponents

Top Unusual Poker Tips to Confuse Opponents

While the majority of poker coaches and professional players are primarily focused on how to tilt each other or get an edge in their poker strategy, the community has a few much more creative ways to play. Not all of them can help you make more money — but at least they’re capable of making your session more entertaining to defer burnout.

PokerListings takes a dip into the depth of poker Reddit to collect the weirdest and most unexpected strategies to brighten your day a little and give you some ideas for your sessions.

Warning: Take Social Media Tips with a Grain of Salt

Social media content is often subjective, misleading and inadequate when it comes to almost every aspect of life, but especially narrow areas and industries such as poker.

As Nathan “BlackRain79” Williams explains, since at least 70% of poker players are losing players, their advice can’t help you to become a winner but can surely help you lose more.

You can’t check credentials, experience and skills of the 99% of “advisers” on social media, so by following them you rely on unverified information of dubious value.

Use Ax & All Suited Hands to Balance the Opening Range

According to Redditor named Charlie_Wax, the optimal way to balance your range of starting hands and worsen opponents’ understanding of your play style is including some specific cards there:

If you’re looking to optimally balance your range of starting hands, you want to include some suited Ax and suited connectors. It’s also important to include some suited disconnectors like 39 and J5. These are excellent 3 and 4 bet bluff candidates because they have wide board coverage and the ability to connect with multiple straight draws.

By widening your range with split hands like J5, you make it possible to cover a bigger range of straights than if you have only connectors, pairs and premium cards.

For the same reason you also should always call pre-flop as a disguise for your range.

Continue Gamble to Win More

If you do not play, you do not use your chances to win money. And if you play too safe, you become an obvious prey for perceptive regulars. So, if we are willing to believe a person named FjortoftsAirplane, you just can’t stop gambling if you want not only to win your money back but also multiply it:

If you stop gambling then you have a 0% chance of winning your money back, but as long as you keep gambling there is always some >0% chance of winning your money back. That means it’s always better to keep gambling than to stop, no matter how much you’ve lost.

”[Also, remember:] T5o is the strongest drawing hand in poker. It’s the only hand that can make any straight and also has the maximum number of flush draws preflop. The more hands you play the more likely it becomes that you will face a cooler. This means in tournament formats your goal is to win the tournament as soon as possible. The best way to do this is to bust players as quickly as possible. The easiest way to achieve this is to jam all playable hands.”

The logic is simple: if you continue to gamble no matter your results, your opponents will decide that you are whale or titled — and they start making mistakes that you can use to outplay them.

Fold Out of Position to Create an Image

If you start each of your sessions with repetitive folding out of position, your opponents quickly learn that any other action from you in this case is extremely dangerous for them — and begin overfolding. At least, that’s how Realdogxl explains the logic behind this strategy:

Realdogxl

Essentially early on at the table you should make a few open folds on the flop when you have nothing. Make these folds fairly deliberate and [In the live game also] act somewhat annoyed.

”After a couple of these bad boys your opponents now need to really consider betting or not when you check them. Instead of checking 100% of your garbage range to them like most reasonable heroes you now have a 5th Ace up your sleeve, you have NOT folded out of position and now they must consider whether you have a strong holding, even though you have done nothing more than check on the flop.”

However, if you notice that someone is close to cracking your strategy, you should turn 180 degrees and start to act completely opposite to throw off the scent and confuse them even more.

Play on the Button as This is a Weak Position

While all poker books describe the Button as one of the best positions because of how late you make decisions, some players offer to change perspective on it to make opponents anxious, as Del_3030 describes it:

Del_3030

The button is a theoretically weak position post-flop since everyone else gets a chance to bluff before you. For this reason, you should only play the top 5% of hands from the button since you’re so often going to be pressured by the players in earlier positions. You can expand on this range slightly if you always jam pre-flop since you no longer have to act last for the rest of the hand.

However, for more confusion you can choose to rotate playing styles depending on period of time or other inputs at your discretion.
