Poker Q&A: Freerolls, Short Stack Play, and How to Win

1. What’s up With the Freeroll Passwords?

Last Friday our $150 freeroll on 888poker didn’t go as planned. The password had a typo, and only the sharp-eyed managed to figure it out.

To avoid this happening again, we’ve moved our $150 freeroll on 888poker to Thursdays. That means you can now play both the $150 freeroll on 888poker and the $50 freeroll on WPT Global on the same night.

2. Short Stack Play

With 15 BB you’re already short, and spots like this don’t come around often. If you wait, you might end up jamming Ax into multiple callers instead of one raise.

Calling here feels awkward — you’ll see overcards on the flop way too often, face a c-bet, and end up guessing. Not a spot I want.

Shoving is better. Most of the time you’ll be flipping against two overs. Sometimes you run into Ax or a bigger pair, but that’s poker. With tens, it’s a snap. With eights, I still lean shove and let the opponent sweat while I sip my tea.

One option Jason didn’t mention: fold. Against a tight small stack, I’d fold. Against a loose big stack, I’m shoving all day.

3. Online Poker in Germany

Jack asked if you can play more than 4 tables at once in Germany.

Surprise: the regulator there capped it at 4 tables. Feels like 2002, doesn’t it?

The good news: most legal sites still let you play more than 4 if it’s on different stakes or in different formats. Worth a shot.

As for unlicensed rooms ignoring German law — play there at your own risk. We don’t recommend it.

4. Studying Poker

If you’re new, start with video courses and training apps. Don’t waste time breaking down the play of high-stakes pros — it’s a different world.

Forget GTO solvers for now. Focus on mindset. Most beginners lose not because of theory but because of tilt and emotional decisions.

Find a small study group, review hands together, and keep each other accountable. That’s worth more than any solver at the start.

5. How Do You Win at Poker?

Here’s the truth: most people don’t. You’re playing against your opponents and the rake. To beat both, you need to be consistently stronger — or luckier.

Start small. Learn the rules, pick up basic strategy, watch some videos. Then stick to bankroll management like it’s religion.

Poker isn’t a casino. You don’t just walk into NL500, double up twice, and leave a hero. Winning takes distance, patience, and discipline.

Grind the lower limits, split your time between playing and learning, and don’t let emotions push you off your rules. One day you’ll notice — you’re the best player at your table. Then you can cautiously move up.

That’s how many successful regs made it. You can too — if you keep your head.
