Poker Pros on Fire: The Story of Mike Leah
Table of Contents
Most poker players encounter ups and downs throughout their career, with many hoping that when things go your way, that they go your way at just the right time. Usually that lucky wave is short lived, lasting for a few levels or if you’re lucky, the entire tournament. Rarely does that hot streak last days.
That said, recently one of the most successful poker players to ever come out of Canada experienced just that — an extended hot streak. Mike Leah is going through one of the craziest runs in poker right now, propelling him back into the spotlight as one to watch just as the World Series of Poker is around the corner.
A Little Bit About Mike Leah
Leah is no stranger to poker success. The Innisfill, Ontario native has over $9 million in career earnings and is in the top 10 poker players to ever come out of Canada. He has two WSOP bracelets in his trophy case, we’ll get to the second one in a moment, and has multiple WPT titles, effectively re-naming the event that was held in Niagara, Falls, Ontario the Mike Leah Invitational.
The majority of his winnings came before 2020, with his three biggest cashes:
| Year | Finish | Event | Prize |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 | 2nd | $5,300 NLHE Main Event at the Seminole Hard Rock Open | Just over $1,000,000 |
| 2015 | 2nd | $10,000 NLHE Championship at the WPT LA Poker Classic | $700,000 |
| 2017 | 2nd | $25,000 NLHE High Roller at the Seminole Hard Rock Open | $561,000 |
It’s 2026 and Mike is Back
GoLeafsGoEh, he is a Toronto Maple Leafs fan after all, started the 2026 season at the WSOP Circuit Event in Calgary, where he cashed in four events in early January, the most notable coming in the $500 NLHE PKO Event, finishing 17th for $736 CAD before turning around in the $2,200 Main Event, finishing 165th for a $4,700 payday.
A month later, Leah travelled to Niagara Falls finishing 39th in the Casino Niagara Winter Main Event for another $2900 CAD, which set him up for his March trip to Regina. From March 19th to March 21st, Leah cashed in three consecutive events, winning the first for $50k CAD, a $1K NLHE event.
The next day, Leah won the $1,300 NLHE for another $82k, before getting heads-up in the next tournament the next day, but losing the heads-up match to Teco Bird, cashing for another $64k. All in all, Leah banked $196k on $4100 in buy-ins, giving him a ROI of just under 4800%.

With those winnings and all the momentum in the world, Mike Leah flew across the pond to play the WSOP Europe series in Prague, where Magic Mike kept his hot streak going, cashing five times, including two final tables and his second career bracelet! He netted €14k in the Main Event, placing 150th before winning event #10 – €2,750 Rounder Cup for €292k! He wrapped up his trip placing 8th in the €1500 NLHE Turbo event for €5,150!

Altogether, Leah added $515k USD to his career totals in the first three months of 2026, and he will be looking to add to that total this summer when he heads to the WSOP.
He cashed 11 times last year, with his highest finish coming in event #42, the $1K PLO 8 handed event where he came 39th for $6,800, and his biggest cash coming in event #89 – the $3K Mid-Stakes Championship, where his 86th place finish scored just under $14k.
Mike Leah is a rare double threat in the poker world, a tournament grinder capable of running deep in any tournament he enters and someone who is as dangerous to bankrupt the cash game tables if he takes a seat. Keep your eye on Mike Leah this summer. He won’t be watching the Leafs make a run in the playoffs, which means all of his attention will be concentrated on dismantling the opponents at his table, and going for his third career bracelet!
