Between 2021 and 2026, GGPoker underwent major changes and offered players a variety of challenges. All that time one thing remained in the shadow: Battle Royale tournaments.
How is it possible that such a unique and accessible game is not on everyone’s mind? We want to know but even more than that we want to tell you why Mystery Battle Royale is a great format that is undeservedly left out of the spotlight.

The Brief History of Battle Royale on GGPoker
The winding path of Battle Royale started in June 2021 when the game was introduced as a part of Dan Bilzerian’s inauguration, who then turned out to be one of the worst ambassadors in poker history, at least as far as the GGPoker team goes.

At the start, Battle Royale was a 100 players capped Sit&Go with bounties in three stages:
- 6-Max Rush: The fast-fold stage where players could fold their hand at any point and start the next hand at another table without waiting for the previous one to be over. This stage continued until 50 players remained.
- 5-Max Shootout Zone: A shootout Sit&Go that went on until one winner remained at each table. After 15 minutes, the All-In Mode was activated and all remaining players started to go all-in every hand.
- 10-Max Final Table: The only ITM stage, single-table Sit&Go.
Rake at that time was only 4-5%, significantly less than in any other Sit&Go and MTT.
In July 2021, GGPoker decided to make Battle Royale quicker by reducing players’ cap to 30 and also making the final table 5-max.
In March 2022, Dan Bilzerian was “friend-zoned” by GGPoker after the room demoted him from ambassador to more of a partner, some guy that hangs around. This demotion was made on March 8th, International Women’s Day, a few months after Bilzerian publicly called Vanessa Kade “hoe” on Twitter, said that women are bad at poker, and ignored his obligation to play against Alex O’Brien after she won a place in the heads-up against him.

As a result, Bilzerian completely vanished from the GGPoker lobby, including not only the Battle Royale section but even emoji menu. From that moment, Battle Royale was redesigned to keep its idea but distance the game from the unfortunate partnership.
In March 2024, GGPoker added Mystery to Battle Royale, following the Mystery Bounty trend in the industry. This change increased rake to 8% but also made the game quicker (only 18 players, no more Shootout Zone) and more joyful for recreational players.

The only promotion created specifically for Battle Royale was regular Leaderboards. For some time, the game was a subject of the Gift Box promotion and Mega Bounty Jackpot.
GGPoker also launched different features for Battle Royale, including prop bets and Beat & Muck, but unfortunately none of them weren’t uniquely designed for this peculiar game.
How Mystery Battle Royale Works in 2026
As of March 2026, Mystery Battle Royale has 5 buy-ins with a different maximum mystery bounty:
- $0.25 —> $5,000
- $1 —> $10,000
- $3 —> $30,000
- $10 —> $100,000
- $25 —> $250,000
The game starts after 18 players are registered. The first stage is a 6-max Rush stage, a fast-fold that lasts until nine players remain. No bounties or prizes are available during the Rush stage. The remaining nine players go to the next stage, the 9-max Final Stage. This is a Sit&Go with three paid places and mystery bounties for each knockout.
All prizes are fixed while bounties can be anywhere in the corresponding range:
| Buy-in | 1st place | 2nd place | 3rd place | Bounty Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $0.25 | $1 | $0.75 | $0.50 | $0.06 — $5,000 |
| $1 | $4 | $3 | $2 | $0.25 — $10,000 |
| $3 | $12 | $9 | $6 | $0.75 — $30,000 |
| $10 | $40 | $30 | $20 | $2.50 — $100,000 |
| $25 | $100 | $75 | $50 | $6 — $250,000 |
The game is fast. The Rush stage lasts for 10 minutes and if more than nine players remain after that, all players with 9th stack and less participate in the all-in shootout until there is only one left.
An average tourney lasts ~26 minutes but you’ll never play more than 45 minutes, no matter how leisurely your opponents are.
What Makes Mystery Battle Royale Special
Even after two years of being a Mystery, Battle Royal still isn’t as popular as its MTT relatives. For some reason, GGPoker hesitates to expand its promotional campaign beyond daily leaderboards.
While VIP tables, WSOP Online, and special promotions for tournaments are widely advertised, Mystery Battle Royale humbly blends into the background right next to Flip&Go tournaments.
This is unfair because Mystery Battle Royale is actually quite easy and profitable to play. And I have two reasons to believe so.
Mystery Battle Royale is Very Rec Friendly
It’s a Texas Hold’em tournament but without the MTT headache. You start with a 50 bb stack, the gameplay is dynamic thanks to fast-fold and pace changes between stages, and the mystery bounties make your experience a little less predictable, giving you a chance to win something after only 10 minutes of play.

At the same time, it isn’t as crazy as Spin&Gold, here you play fast but not racing against blind levels.
As a cherry on top: the majority of professional players see Mystery Battle Royale as just gambling. They don’t know and don’t want to learn how to play the game, so they avoid it or play just a little to make the MTT session less boring.
Mystery Battle Royale Is Highly Profitable for Educated Pros
Since this game is not as popular among professional players and has a lot of recreationals, it’s perfect for those who are ready to study the format and make a decent profit from it.
Even among the regulars, the majority of players in 2026 are quite weak since they’re mostly self-taught. There aren’t many schools that specialize in Mystery Battle Royale and those that exist are not interested in making their knowledge publicly available. They also try not to advertise their work too openly because GGPoker does not tolerate poker stables and schools.
However, if you manage to get into such a school or figure out the strategy on your own, which requires a lot of work on the database since the ranges in this game are different from other Sit&Go and tournaments, you’ll hit a gold mine with a very soft field and nice EV.
