Mohegan Sun introduces new poker room

Empire Casino, London

Poker is making a triumphant return to the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.

On Friday management at the Mohegan Sun held the grand opening for a 64,000-square-foot addition to the casino, which will be called Casino of the Wind.

The new casino is part of a $925 million expansion to keep up with the nearby Foxwoods Resort Casino, which itself is attempting to expand with a new $700 million MGM Grand casino.

The most interesting development for the new casino at the Mohegan Sun, at least for poker players, is the revival of live poker games. The Mohegan Sun shut down its poker room in 2003, just as the poker boom was getting started.

"When we closed our poker room, poker exploded," admitted Mohegan Sun CEO Mitchell Etess in an article on Courant.com.

The new Mohegan Sun poker room will feature 42 poker tables complete with 24 suspended televisions so players can keep track of their various sports teams and other betting endeavors. The poker will finally provide legitimate competition for the massive poker facilities at Foxwoods Casino.

Of course poker won't be the only entertainment on the agenda, with standard table games including blackjack, roulette, craps and slot machines all included in the new casino. Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is scheduled to open right next to the poker room in the coming months.
